Biography

James was born about 1765. He first appears on the Barren County, Kentucky, tax rolls in 1799. He remained there through 1817--there is no book for 1818--and he is missing from the 1819 book. Monroe County was created from part of Barren in 1820, and James is on those tax rolls from 1820 through 1829.

The 1810 household consisted of: 1 male over 45, 1 female 26-44, 2 females 10-15, and 1 male and 5 females 0-5. His first wife, unkown, died by 1820, when she was missing from the census.

The 1820 household contained 3 males over 45, 1 females 16-25, and 1 male and 3 females 10-15. The household dynamic matches the number and ages of the presumed children who have been identified.

He is said to have married Zereviah Eubanks about 1821. She is said to have died in childbirth about 1823.

James married Mary Short about 1825. They had 3 children. The 1830 household consisted of 1 male 60-69, 1 male 50-59, 1 female 40-49, a male and a female 20-29, a female 15-19, 1 female 5-9, and a male 0-5.

James bought 40 acres of Federal land in Cole County, and the patent was dated 30 Jul 1833.

He passed away in 1839.

Notes

Monroe County is a 'burned' county. Disasters in 1863 and 1887 destroyed most records. The early records that are mostly complete are the tax records, which do give an indication of his level of prosperity, but not much else.

Cole County, Missouri, apparently also suffered a courthouse fire--according to the woman at the desk, who said that the few extant records were housed at the State Archives.

There is no tombstone photo, and there is no documentation given regarding his date and place of birth or exact date of death.
