Biography

Giuseppe Todaro is born around 1878 in Italy, the son of Joseph Todaro and Josephine Di Maggio.

He emigrates in 1907 and in 1910, lives with two of his brothers in New Orleans.

In the 1910 federal census of New Orleans, Ward 15, taken 25/26 April, Carlo Todaro 41 (b. 1869), heads a household on Patterson St. Carlo has been married for 8 years (m. 1902) to Grace, 28 (b. 1882). Both born in Italy and emigrated in 1906. Carlo is a farm laborer. Also living with them are his brothers Sam, 34 (b. 1876), and Joseph, 32 (b. 1878), who both emigrated in 1907 and work as farm laborers.[1]

Joseph Todaro, son of Joseph Todaro and Josephine Dimaggio, marries Florence Giammalva, daughter of Clement Giammalva and Giacoma Moscone, on 3 October 1913 in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. He is 38 (b. 1875) and she is 21 (b. 1892).[2][3]

Joseph and Florence have seven known children: Josephine (1914), a girl named Giacomina who dies in infancy in 1915, Giacomina/Jacqueline (1917), Mary (c. 1920), a baby boy who is stillborn in 1926, Lena (c. 1927), and Grace (c. 1928).

Josephine is born on 30 October 1914 in New Orleans.[4]

"Gracomina" (Giacomina) Todaro, age zero, dies on 19 November 1915 in Orleans, Louisiana.[5]

Jacqueline is born on 20 October 1917[6] in Louisiana.[7][8]

Joseph Todaro, is the underboss to Sylvestro Carolla in New Orleans. His brother, Frank, is a capo in the Matranga crime family. Frank sponsors Joseph's future son-in-law Carlos Marcello's membership. Frank is briefly the boss of the New Orleans Mafia, the year he dies from throat cancer, in 1944.[9]

In the 1920 federal census of Orleans County, Louisiana, taken 7 January, Joseph Todaro heads a household at 839 St. Mary. He is 42 (b. 1877), from Italy, immigrated in 1909. His wife Florence, 27 (b. 1892), immigrated in 1899. Their children at home are Josephine, 5 (b. 1914), and Giacomina, 2 yr 2 mo. (b. Oct 1917), both born in Louisiana.

Also living with them is Joseph’s mother, Josephine, 74 (b. 1845), a widow, who immigrated from Italy in 1911; and Joseph’s brother, Frank, also from Italy, and his family. Frank Todaro is 29 (b. 1890), immigrated in 1907. His wife is Nancy, 24 (b. 1895), also born in Italy, immigrated in 1899. Their children are Joseph, 3 yr 1 mo (b. Dec 1916), and Josephine, 1 yr 6 mos. (b. Jul 1918), both born in Louisiana. Joseph is the proprietor of a barroom. His brother, Frank, is also working on his own account as a bartender in a barroom.[10]

Josephine, Joseph's mother who lives with them, dies on 3 September 1922 in Algiers, Louisiana, where she has lived for twelve years.[11] She is buried in St Mary Cemetery in Algiers.[12]

Baby boy Todaro, son of Joe Todaro and Florence Gramealora, dies on 20 August 1926 in Orleans, Louisiana, age zero.[13]

In the 1930 federal census of the US Penitentiary in Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth, KS, taken 10 April:

94. Joseph Todaro, 54 (b. 1876), married, first married at 29, born in Italy, emigrated in 1908, filed first papers for naturalization, no occupation. He can read and write, and speak English.[14]

His wife and children live on Conti in New Orleans.[15]

His mother-in-law, a native of Sancipirello, Italy, dies 21 January 1933. Her obituary appears in a New Orleans newspaper.[16]

Jacqueline marries Carlos Marcello (born "Calogero Menacari" in Tunisia) on 6 September 1936.[9]

On 26 June 1937 there is an auto accident in Bay St. Louis, MS, that results in someone losing an arm. Respondents in the case are New Orleans Brewing Company Inc., Joseph Todaro, alleged driver of the truck, and A. Trapani, alleged distributing agent of the brewing company in Hancock County, MS. Todaro and Trapani both live in Bay St. Louis. They were transporting beer for the brewing company when the accident occurred.[17]

In 1940, Joseph's wife Florence lives with their married daughter Josephine on Freret Street in New Orleans.[18]

Florence dies on 26 December 1977 at 84.[19][20]

Josephine dies on 9 March 2000. She last lived in Metairie, Louisiana.[4]

Jacqueline dies at age 96 at home in Gretna, Louisiana, on 11 January 2014.[21]
