John Tilley was christened 26 Aug 1599 in Henlow, Beds, England.[1] Per Anderson's profile of his father, there was no further record of him. When his father came on the Mayflower, he did so only with a wife Joan (Hurst) and daughter, Elizabeth. "John and his wife left children in Bedfordshire who could conceivably have left descendants, though none living today is yet known."[2]
NOTE: He was NOT the John Tilley of Dorchester, Dorsetshire, profiled by Anderson in the Great Migration series who migrated 1624 settling first in Cape Ann, then Dorchester by 1633. That John Tilley was killed by Indians near Saybrook, October 1636.[3] He married, but no children were recorded to him.

John Tilley should indeed not be considered as the John Tilley from Dorchester Dorset! Could this muddle have come about due to the John Tilley of 1599-1636 emigrating to Dorchester, MA? He was born in Henlow, Bedfordshire and was the son of John Tilley & Judith Hurst, passengers of the Mayflower who both died in 1621. John junior had been left behind in England as an apprentice with his 5 siblings, one of whom died very young. In 1624, influenced by the Rev John White, a Puritan minister, John set sail on board the "Zouche Phoenix" from Weymouth (various ships passenger lists can confirm this) purchased by the Dorchester (there's that word again!) Company Adventurers. They landed at Cape Ann later than year. Accounts vary but he is classed as either a mariner or fisherman, assigned to manage the fisheries in Cape Ann. He moved onto to be one of the founders of Dorchester (later renamed Windsor) MA & it is here that he is thought to have married an Edith Camp. I believe there is a memorial stone to the founders which bears his name. Some confusion surrounds whether he had had a first marriage. It has been claimed that there is no record of children but there are some documented on several family trees including an Elizabeth Tilley born 1632. She married Thomas Merrick (1620-1704), lived in Springfield & had 8 children. Some commentators have questioned whether this Elizabeth Tilley is the daughter of our John Tilley junior. But from the evidence I've seen, I am reasonably sure she was. I am happy to be proved wrong! John Tilley junior died in 1636 along with several other settlers during an altercation with American Indians as they left their boat on the river at Old Saybrook to go hunting. This was around the time of the 12 month Pequot War.
According to The Great Migration Begins, page 1822, this John Tilley, the son of John Tilley of the Mayflower, was "bp. Henlow 26 August 1599; no further record'. It seems unlikely that he had a daughter Elizabeth. I believe that Elizabeth (Tilley-139) Merrick should be detached as his daughter.
Tilley-501 and Tilley-125 do not represent the same person because: Very obvious differences; one is John and the other is Elizabeth; one is male and the other is female.

1. Whom did he marry? I'm tracking Edith Camp... is that known-wrong, or just non-confirmed?
2. If he's not the father of Elizabeth Tilley-139 m. Merrick (Meyrick), then, anybody know who is? Tilley-139 currently shows another John...
