William Thrall was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England.

William Thrall was baptised 25 September 1825 in Mansfield ^[1][2].

William joined the army in 1848 at the age of 22. He became a sergeant in the Royal Artillery, seeing service in Halifax, Nova Scotai for four years. He served for a total of 21 years and was discharged from the regiment in 1869 in Dublin. ^[3]

During this period he married Margaret Evans from Ireland in Greenwich in 1858 ^[4].

In 1871 William was a pensioner living at Wood Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire with his wife Margaret and 6 children ^[5].
