Edgar William Thornell was born in 1896 in Frankston, Victoria, Australia, son of Alfred Thornell (1862 - 1944) and Elizabeth (Mentiplay) Thornell (1870 - 1941).[1]
His sister was Dorothy Margaret (Thornell) Shelton (1900 - 1948).
Edgar enlisted in to the Australian Imperial Force on 22 March 1916 and, after completing basic training, was shipped to England aboard the troop ship 'Nestor' embarking on 2 October 1916 and arriving in Plymouth, England, on 16 November 1916. He was hospitalised with influenza within a month of arrival in England.
He was shipped out to France in February 1917 but, soon after arrival, suffered apendicitis, hospitalized, and then returned to England. Edgar didn't recover from his illnesses and remained under care until his death.
Edgar died on 9 Aug 1918 in Weymouth, Dorset, England, United Kingdom aged ~22, and his remains were interred 19 August 1918, Grave 3048, Section C, Non-conformist.
A newspaper article was published in the Mornington Standard (Frankston, Vic. : 1911 - 1920), Saturday 24 August 1918, Page 3, SOMERVILLE that reads ... Word was received last week of the death of Private Edgar Thornell, the only Son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Thornell, of Somerville, and general regret is expressed for the relatives. Deceased soldier had been on service for two years and was in France for seven months, but returned suffering from trench fever and appendicitis and was very ill for a considerable time before his death, which occurred at Weymouth Hospital, England, on the 7th of August. He was 22 years of age.[2]
