Biography

Elizabeth was born in Ontario [Upper Canada] ^[1][2][3][4] on 13 Sep 1823.^[5]

She married Edward Thorndyke about April 9, 1848. He was a farmer who was born in England in 1825. They had 11 children between 1850 and 1868. Their children were:

• John Thorndyke, born about 1848^[1]
• William Thorndyke, born about 1852^[6][7]
• Joseph Thorndyke, born about 1854^[8]
• Ellen Jane Thorndyke, born on 26 Nov 1857^[9][10]
• Elizabeth Thondyke, born on 26 Nov 1858^[11][12]
• Edward Thorndyke, born about 1859^[1]
• Hannah Mariee Thorndyke, born about 1863^[13]
• Emma Thorndyke, born on 28 April 1865.^[14][15]
• Charlotte Ann Thorndyke, born about 1862^[2]
• Mary Adele Thorndyke, born about 1867^[2]
• Hortese Thorndyke, born about 1869.^[2]

In 1861, their home in Cavan, Durham, Canada West (Ontario) consisted of: Edward (36), Elizabeth (37), John (12), William (10), Joseph (8), Ellen Jane (6), Elizabeth (4) and Edw (2); Edward and his son, John worked as laborers.^[1] They lived next to her parents John Thorn and Ellen Redmond and very close to John Shaw and his wife Mary Ann Thorn (Elizabeth's sister) in the 1861 census.

Her husband is dead by the 1871 census and she was living with most of her children and very close to other Thorndyke, Thorn and Shaw families. In 1871, their Cavan household consisted of: Elizabeth (Widowed and 47), John (21), William Thorndike (19), Joseph (17), Ellen Jane (15), Elizabeth (13), Edward (11), Charlotte Ann (9), Hanah Maria (7), Emma (6), Mary Adelaide (4), and Hortense (2).^[2]

In 1881, their Cavan household consisted of: Edward (21, Farmer), Maria (17), Emma (15), Adilade (14), Hartence (12), Elizith (57), and William (24, Farmer).^[3]

By 1891 she is living with just a daughter Mary.^[4][16]

In 1901, Elizabeth (78 and widowed) was living with son, William and his family.^[5] She died around the time of the 1901 census enumeration.

Elizabeth died suddenly on 28 March 1901, at the age of 77 from heart disease.^[17] Both Elizabeth and her husband Edward are buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Millbrook, Ontario.

William born 1852 and died 1919 in Durham and buried in Union Cemetery, Port Hope. He married Mary Meadows June 1880.

Joseph born Feb. 16, 1854 and married Frances Calvert in June 1873. He died June 1914.

Ellen Jane born Nov., 1856 and is last found in 1871 census. She married John Gibson.

Elizabeth born Nov.,1857 and died in York, Ontario in 1934 and is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Millbrook. She married William Derbyshire Sept. 1880 in Millbrook.

Were daughters, Ellen Jane and Elizabeth really born exactly one year apart? Their names at death: Ellen Jane Gibson and Elizabeth Derbyshire, so not the same person. They also both appear in the 1861 and 1871 census records at different ages so probably not twins.

Edward born 1859 and never married. He is a farmer and his sister Mary lives with him. They go to Azusa, California Sept. 5, 1923 to visit their sister Eveline Oliver. He died 1947.

Charlotte Ann born in Aug.,1861 and last found in 1871 census. She died in 1927.

Hannah Maria (Anna Maria) born Aug., 1863 and married William Henry Oliver Oct. 1890. They live in Toronto and it is her name (as relative in Canada) Maria Oliver on the immigration paper that Edward and Mary fill out to visit California. The name Mina is on her headstone.

Emma born in 1865 and last found in 1881 census.

Mary Adelaide born in March 1867 and lives with her mother in 1891 and then her brother Edward. She is known as Mary in her later years and visits California with her brother.

Hortense Emeline born in 1869 and married Arthur Oliver.. she moved to California.
