Biography

Obituary:[1]

THE LATE MR. JOHN THORLEY
The death, on Sunday last, of Mr. John Thorley, husband of Mrs. Minnie Marion Thorley, of Scone, ended an illness which had persisted for the greater part of thirty years, during which protracted illness he had either been connnea to an invalid s chair or to his room, due to a form of paralysis which he contracted while employed on the Dykes at Newcastle. Although his condition had worsened, if that were possible, in recent years, he bore up stoically and was never known to utter a complaint, and if he suffered it , was in silence. But throughout his long indisposition, his wife, with unexampled loyalty and fidelity, stood by and with him, never sparing herself in her solicitations for his comfort and painstaking care. For this the unfortunate patient invariably expressed his undying grautude which ne openly expressed to those who sought to give him a little succour by visiting his bedside. The deceased, despite his condition, never despaired that some day he would throw off his trouble, and discussed local and district topics quite coherently, and of which he was well versed, thanks to his early grounding and education generally. His with drawal from the bame and the community withal came as a great wrench to his helpmeet and those of his confreres who gave of their hours of leisure to give him a ray of light in his unenviable predicament.
The late Mr. Thorley was born at Newcastle 60 years ago, and there was married 31 years' since, his wife being the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Newman, a worthy nonagenarian couple who spent virtually the whole of their lives in Scone. His mother, a relict of the late Mr. John Thorley, resides in Tamworth, and has reached the nonagenarian mile-stone on life's journey. A large family of four brothers and seven sisters also survive, they being: Messrs. Alan, Reginald, Frank (Tamworth) and M. Thorley (Wallangara) , Mesdames E. Jurd (Barraba), S. Bradshaw (Sydney), J. Hough (Tamworth), H. Burraston (Werris Creek), E. Richards (Oberon), A. Musgrave (Tamworth), and Miss Lucy Thorley, also of Tamworth.
The remains were removed on Sunday night to Tamworth, where burial took place following service in St. John's Church of England, where Rev.S. V. Satchell Th.L., Rector of Scone, officiated, as he also did at the graveside.

Research Notes

While the obituaries published at Scone suggest birth at Newcastle, the ones published in the New England say that he was born at Uralla. There is no obvious birth registration in this name in NSW to these parents in 1887.

However, given that his likley parents marriage was registered at Uralla in 1880 and they had a number of births registered there between 1881 and 1895 that is considered to be most likley correct.
