Charles Edward Poulett Thomson was the youngest of the nine children of John Poulett Thomson and Charlotte Jacob.
After his election to the House of Commons in 1826, he served as vice-president of the Board of Trade and treasurer of the navy. In 1834 and 1835 he was president of the Board of Trade. In 1839 he was appointed governor-in-chief of British North America.
