Tennessee Residents Face Removal to Louisiana to Get Federal Hearing
NASHVILLE Sept 8. (AP)
Arguments were resumed today in federal court on a petition for removal of 11 residents of Tennessee to La., to face trial on charges of violating the federal gasoline tax laws.
Judge George C. Taylor was expected to reach a decision later on the petition filed by U S District Attorney Harvey G. Fields of Shreveport. Tried in state courts here last year the Tennesseans were indited by a federal grand jury in Louisiana along with others from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
The government charges they lost thousands of dollars in alleged tax violations when gasoline was labelled as kerosene to evade payment of taxes. Of Tennessee's estimated loss of $200,000, barely $105, 000 was recovered. The defendants are Robert Dudley, Nashville; J. V. Beasley, Paul Bell Thompson, James W. Perkins, Mrs Dora Dillard Cornelison, Nashville; Norman Westall ,Lawrenceburg; James E Evins, Lebanon; Earl Hudson, Ma plewood; H. H. Watson, Hartsville; G. G. Geans, Halls; and W. H. Land, Memphis.
