The Machine Gun in the Corner

George Thomas Bond served in World War I. Afterwards back in civilian life, he was a farmer and subsequently a welder at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia. He was forced to take disability because he got lead poisoning as a welder at the shipyard.

Back in the 1950s, at my grandfather George Thomas "Big Jimmy" Bond's house in Portsmouth, Virginia, there was a WWII Japanese machine gun standing in the corner of the living room. (Today, Guam is a huge Navy firing range.)

Note: Grandfather "Big Jimmy" Bond's house was the caretaker's house at the Jewish Cemetery in Portsmouth. Grandfather "Big Jimmy" Bond was the cemetery caretaker and grave digger. Grandfather "Big Jimmy" Bond lived in that house until he died of gangrene. He had cut his foot with a push lawnmower and gangrene set in.

I was a small child back then in the 1950's. The machine gun was very heavy. It was like a heavy steel barbell standing in the corner.

My Thomason first cousins grew-up on the island of Guam, in the Pacific Ocean. Their father was a Navy demolitions diver (a frog-man). This was before the Navy Seals, but he was just like today's Navy Seals.

My cousin Harry Jr. Thomason (a teenager) found this Japanese machine gun in a cave on Guam. Harry Jr. and his father sent this machine gun back to the USA in parts, back to my grandfather Bond's house.

I was told by my cousin Fred Thomason, that the machine gun disappeared when my cousin Harry Jr. Thomason passed away.
