Biography

George was born about 1759. He was the illegitimate son of Sir Hugh Palliser. Hugh recognized him in his will "I give and bequeath unto my natural or reputed Son, George Thomas, now Clerk of the Survey in Plymouth Dock Yard." George assumed the Palliser name at this point in time (1796).[1]

"The King has been pleased to grant unto George Thomas, of Chatham, in the County of Kent, Esq; His Royal Licence and Authority that he and his Issue Male may (pursuant to the last Will and Testament of of Sir Hugh Palliser, of the Vache, in the County of Buckingham, Hart, deceased, late Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet, and Governor of Greenwich Hospital) assume and bear tlic Arms of Palliser only, with proper Distinctions; provided such Arms be first duly exemplified according to the Laws of Arms, and recorded in the Heralds Office: And also to order that this His Majesty's Concession and Declaration be registered in his College of Arms. "

George married Ann Parminter in 1791 in Devon, England.[2] They were the parents of twelve children.[3]

  • George Hugh Thomas (later George Hugh Palliser) (born c. 1792, baptised 13 November 1793 – 26 September 1842, aged 50). He was a captain in the Royal Marines.

George received "The Vache" in Buckinghamshire and other property after father Sir Hugh’s death but, being illegitimate, could not succeed to the baronetcy. It passed, instead, to Hugh Palliser Walters (1768-1813), the grandson of Hugh’s sister, Rebecca, who had married William Walters.[4][5]
