John was born in Antigua in the West Indies in 1811. He was of African ancestry. On 1st December 1835 John Thom was tried in Tobago [1] and charged with the offence of "rape on a black girl named Nancy." For this crime John was sentenced to 14 years as a convict in Van Diemen's Land. In 1836 John was one of 286 male convicts transported on the Lady Nugent [2] [3] He departed Sheerness on 14th July 1836, travelled via the Cape and arrived at Van Diemen's Land on on 12th November 1836, a voyage of 121 days.
