Biography

Clinton Hale Tebbetts was born on January 30, 1848, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to Jonas March Tebbetts and Matilda Jane Winlock1. He had six siblings: Marion, Lillian, Harry, Annie, Edward and Howard. He attended West Point Military Academy from 1866 to 1870, graduating in the middle of his class. He married Katherine Curry on May 25, 1874, in Mercer, Kentucky. They had seven children: W. C., Mary W., Janos M., James Curry, Elizabeth, Marion and Ruth.

Tebbetts worked as a civil engineer and settled in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. He lost everything in the panic of 1893, a financial crisis that affected thousands of Americans. After this loss, he took a position at Culver Military Academy and became Superintendent and Commandant in 1895. He left the Culver Academy in 1896 and became Commandant at the Howe School (later named Howe Military Academy).

In 1898, he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and worked for the H. J. Heinz Company, and later as an inspector of iron and steel for the American Bridge Company. Due to poor health, he was unemployed for a few years. In 1907, he accepted a position as Inspector of Purchases for the U.S. Army at their Pittsburgh Storage and Supply Depot. He remained there until he retired.

He died on February 13, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the age of 72. He was buried in Kent, Connecticut.
