Biography

Matthew was born in 1781. He was the son of Robert Taylor and Ann Sample. He passed away in 1852.

From: The Taylor Family in Lawrence County, Indiana and Erie County, Pennsylvania with a Full Account of the Early History of This Family in Pennsylvania and New York As Well as Briefer Accounts of the Histories of Allen Patterson, and Sample Families in Present - Day Dauphin County, Pennsylvania (draft version) by R. Gregory Taylor July 26, 2005: http://satupe.googlepages.com/img016.pdf

Matthew Sample Taylor was born in 1780 in Milford Township, present--day Juniata County. He married Sarah Allen most likely in 1803 before the family moved to Erie County. He is listed in the 1810 census for that county, where his older children were born. Probably in 1812 he moved his family to Franklin County, Ohio, but by 1820 the Taylors were living in Marshall Township, Lawrence County, Indiana. Sara (Allen) Taylor died there between 1822 and 1826, and Matthew died in 1852. Both are buried on their farm. Their many children, including (our ancestor of the author R. Gregory Taylor) John Allen Taylor (1808--1891), lived and farmed in Monroe and Daviess Counties, and their descendants are living today throughout the Middle West and Plains states.

"Matthew Sample Taylor (1781-1851/52) lived with his wife and large family in Marshall Township, Lawrence County, Indiana from before 1820. His farm was on the south side of what is now Ingram Road, which forms the boundary between Lawrence County and Monroe County to the north, and his home from perhaps 1830 yet stands..."

"Matthew S. Taylor (1780-1852), ancestor of the Taylor family in southwest Indiana, was warranted land, by the State of Indiana, described as the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 4, Marshall Township, Lawrence County on June 18, 1824 (see [44] II, p. 143). This description suggests an 80-acre parcel, but other records indicate 90.6 acres. An adjacent 179 acres in Section 5 was purchased for a sum of $550 from neighbor Hamilton Reddick in 1826 but was transferred back, for the same amount, in1830. All this land lies on the Lawrence-Monroe County border less than two miles south of Harrodsburg in Monroe County and one mile or so northwest of Guthrie in Lawrence..."

In 1826 Matthew bought one hundred seventy-nine acres of land in Section 5 from Hamilton and Mary Reddick for $550 but sold the same parcel back to them for the same amount four years later...

...we know of a number of members of the Taylor family who were unquestionably buried in this cemetery in the 1820s and 1830s, specifically, Matthew's wife Sarah, who died before 1826 and four of their children, two boys who died before 1830 and two girls who died in 1838. Their graves were marked by crudely carved, but sizable, stone "table" markers that barely peep above the earth today. (In 1965, when we first saw them, they protruded above the surface of the earth by perhaps eight or ten inches.) It seems possible that other members of the Reddick family lie in this cemetery in what are now effectively unmarked graves."
