Life Sketch • Major John Taylor was born in Ireland. He ran away to America with the consent of his mother, Mary McCanless Taylor, and with money furnished by her. In Philadelphia, his uncle, George Taylor possibly this George Taylor, befriended him and furnished him money to set up in business in Virginia. He went to Augusta County, Virginia, where he married at the famous Tinkling Springs Church, Elizabeth Campbell. They traveled with their household goods to Rockford, Va., in a wagon driven by her brother, William Campbell, who afterwards became famous as Brigadier General William Campbell, hero of King's Mountain. They settled at Rockford, Va., in what was then Augusta County, and later became Montgomery County and his old family home of Rockford was in their family for many generations.

John Taylor served in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the War of the Revolution. Records of War Department, Adjunct-General's office, Washington, D.C., shows that John Taylor served as Major of Virginia Troops in Revolutionary War; and that on February 3, 1783, the sum of L513, 8s, was awarded in payment of his services.

History of Middle New River Settlement by David E. Johnston p. 144 states that: The Indian depredations began in 1776 in what is now Tazewell. In 1779 the family of Jesse Evans was attacked by 8 or 10 Indians, 4 of his children were killed, his wife with one child escaped to Major Taylor's.

History of Southwest Virginia page 363, states that John Taylor served as Major in Virginia troops, fighting the Indians incited by Tories in 1782. At a meeting of Field Officers if Militia of Montgomery and Washington Counties in conformity to instructions received from the Governor to devise plans for the defense of both countries. The assembly met at the lead mines. Present were all officers of Montgomery and Washington Counties, this included Major John Taylor.
