Biography

Joseph Leslie Theodore Taylor was born in the 29th of June 1888 in North Brighton, Victoria, Australia. He was the fourth child of Benjamin Taylor and Rose Jones. ^[1]

His father and grandfather were coachbuilders and wheelwrights in New St, North Brighton. His grandfather, Isaiah Taylor, was a retired police constable who had taken up coachbuilding after a career of 20 years in the Victorian police force.

The Taylor’s moved from North Brighton to Bridge Road, Richmond after the family coachmaking business was sold by creditors in 1893.  ^[2]

On the 17 January 1912 he marries Eliza Charlotte Haines (aka Dolly Gray) in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. ^[3]

Leslie Taylor, or Squizzy Taylor, was a high-profile Australian gangster during the 1920s. He is believed to be connected with a number of serious crimes including murder, armed robbery, arson, extortion and obstruction of justice, as well as illegal gambling, liquor licensing offences and prostitution. ^[4]

On 19 May 1920 he marries Irene Lorna Kelly in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. ^[5]

On the 6 May 1924 Irene Lorna Kelly and Joseph Leslie Theodore Taylor were divorced. ^[6]

In 1924 he marries Ida Muriel Pender in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. ^[7]

He was fatally wounded in a gunfight with rival gangster, John "Snowy" Cutmore, on 27 October 1927 and died shortly afterwards at St Vincent's hospital, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. ^{[8] [9]} He was 38 years old.

He is buried at the Brighton General Cemetery Caulfield South, Glen Eira City, Victoria, Australia. ^[10]
