Biography

Henry Taylor's origin, parentage, and date of birth are unknown, but it is likely he was born in England. The birth date of 1625 is inferred from the date of his marriage.

Henry lived in Barnstable, and married Lydia Hatch on 19 Dec 1650. [1] They had three children - Lydia, Jonathon, and Mary.[2]

Neither Henry nor wife Lydia's date of death is known, but Henry is seen in Barnstable as late as 1689.[3]

Children[4]

  1. Lydia Taylor, b 21 July 1655
  2. Jonathan Taylor, b 20 Apr 1658
  3. Mary Taylor, b abt 1660 and d 8 Oct 1738; she m Dec 1686 Dr. William Dyer of Truro, MA who d. 27 Jul 1738. They had eight children.

Discussion regarding the several Henry Taylors

Entries from Savage[5] and Torrey[6]:

  1. HENRY, Portsmouth 1640, was in 1648 brot. to prison at Boston, d. 1649. (Clarence Torry's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 does not include him.)
  2. HENRY, Barnstable, m. 19 Dec. 1650, Lydia Hatch, prob. d. of William, or Thomas, of the same, had Lydia, b. 21 June 1655; and Jonathan, 20 Apr. 1658. [THIS PROFILE]
  3. HENRY, Boston, a surgeon, freem. 1665, by w. Mary had Hannah, b. 7 July 1665; John, 4 Aug. 1666; Mary, 6 June 1668; and Henry, 12 Oct. 1670; was one of the gr. body of petnrs. in 1666 to prevent quarrel with the governm. in Eng. [See 2 Mass. Hist. Coll. VIII. 03.]
  4. TAYLOR, Henry & Sarah __?__, [she] m/2 Benjamin FIELD; ca 1693(?); Flushing, LI (Savage doesn't name this one.)

One of these Henry Taylors MIGHT have been the son of John Taylor and Sarah Unknown.

Four known sources claim this Henry was identical with the Dr. Henry Taylor of Boston. This is almost certainly incorrect. There is nothing in the record connecting these two Henrys, and if true, we would find our Henry with two daughters both named Mary, 10 years apart in age - a highly dubious assertion. There is also no evidence that the Henry Taylor of Barnstable was a doctor.

  2. Birth records are seen for Lydia and Jonathon (image at right); daughter Mary is inferred by her marriage, children, and headstone - see Mary Taylor Dyer for further discussion.
  3. The 11 Mar 1688/9 will of Robert Shelley of Barnstable was witnessed by Henry Taylor.

NOTE: It is this source that confuses Henry Taylor of Barnstable with Dr. Henry Taylor of Boston, so this list of children should be double-checked.

Taylor-42936 and Taylor-238 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles appear to be for the same person. Please merge if you agree. Thanks.
The 11 Mar 1688/9 will of Robert Shelley of Barnstable was witnessed by Henry Taylor. This implies that a) Henry was still alive in early 1689 (what's the source for his 1669 death here?), and b) Henry was likely a resident of Barnstable, not Boston. Further evidence against the theory that Henry of Barnstable = Henry of Boston, surgeon. [source: "Abstracts of Barnstable County, MA Probate Records," in Mayflower Descendant, 18:60]

BTW, it was the 1930 Thomas Hatch genealogy that claimed Henry of Barnstable was same s Henry of Boston, surgeon.

I could not easily find any other Henry Taylors to match the other Henry Taylors covered by Savage and Torrey. So I'm removing the text pertaining to the surgeon. We now have to confirm the children of THIS couple and merge duplicates.

Mm... not sure I'm liking Barnstable in suffix. What do others think?

Bryan, looks like you removed your comment (but I got it in email before you did). I have a feeling this profile is the result of an incorrect merge, merging Henry Taylor who married Lydia Hatch with Henry Taylor, surgeon of Boston. To fix this, we need to see if there is another profile for a Henry that would work as either husband of Lydia, or surgeon of Boston, then do the necessary detaching/attaching with this profile. I don't have time to work on this today. Can anyone else? Thanks! (And Thanks, Bryan!)

And how do we know that the Henry Taylor who married Lydia Hatch was the Dr. Henry Taylor, with wife Mary, having several land deed transactions?
