Biography

Sarah Simonds was born on 2 Jul 1668, in Gloucester, Essex County, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of Harlakandin and Elezabeth Simonds.^[1]

Sarah married Thomas Low, Jr., on 2 Dec 1687, in Ipswich (Massachusetts).^[2] They were part of the Chebacco Parish community there when their first son, Symonds, was born on 1 Nov 1689.^[3]

On 1 Mar 1690/1, Sarah's parents, Harlakendine and Elizabeth Symonds granted Sarah and Thomas a 100-year lease on lands in nearby Gloucester.^[4] Sarah and Thomas had, therefore, relocated to Gloucester by 1692, since their second son, Thomas, was born there on 3 Oct 1692.^[5] They had two additional children in Gloucester: a daughter, Elizabeth, born 10 Nov 1695;^[6] and John, born 28 Oct 1697, only about three months before Thomas died.^[7]

Thomas Low died on 8 Feb 1697/8, at Chebacco Parish in Ipswich.^[8]

Sarah Low, as Thomas's widow, signed the Administration Bond for Thomas's estate on 5 Sep 1698. Her sureties were Joseph Allin, a blac[---] (blacksmith?), and Samuel Sargant, a mariner, both of Gloucester.^[9] The inventory of Thomas's personal property, performed on 4 Mar 1697/8 and accepted by the court on 5 Sep 1698, valued it at £80.^[10]

Sarah delayed the inventory of Thomas's real estate holdings at the time of his death (including those held under lease from her parents) until she was summoned by the Probate Court on 1 Jan 1739/40, to present one.^[11] His holdings were valued at £838, as of 23 Jan 1739/40.^[12]
