Biography

I was born in Edson, Alberta, Canada but only spent the first few months of my life living there however I know it very well because we went there often as we were growing up and even since living in England when visiting it seems we only have to call in to the Switzer Drug Store and it's like the drums have been signalling. I lived my time in Canada in Edmonton Where I attended Kindergarten, Elementary school and a short time at Hardisty Junior High School before my parents split up and mum , Glenys and I went to England and stayed with our Grandparents which was lovely. It gave us a chance to get to know them which doesn't truly happen with occasional holidays which just whetted our appetites to want to spend more time with them.

I started school at Bulmershe Secondary School which rubbed the gloss off coming to England a little as I was teased mercilessly. A first it was a novelty for the English children & they would ask how things were said or done in Canada but when I noticed something being done differently that's when the teasing began. I'd been teased in Canada for using terms that were probably terms my Mum used but it seems they weren't used in England anymore. I had been looking forward to having proper History lessons not "Enterprise" which was mostly about explorers, year after year, or so it felt. My first History lesson the teacher (who'd welcomed me to school so knew full well I from Canada) started the class by asking ME "Why might Guy Fawkes not have done what he is supposed to have done?" All I could reply was "Who was Guy Fawkes?" So my dreams of learning the truth about the history of the England I so liked reading in historical novels were dashed.

Hi Terry,

I noticed a problem with a wrong mother which I corrected but there could be other problems please take a look at the Elkins. I can look at sources if it helps sort them out.

Thanks so much Hilary.

I've got to this message but can't seem to make any progress:

Sarah has a child. Is William the other parent?

If Sarah (Elkins) Parratt is a child of William, you will need to replace Sarah's current father separately.

Sarah (Elkins) Parratt is identified but the other Sarah's and William do not have ids attached to tell them apart.

Hey Terry!

I just made a minor template adjustment to the 1891 census on Garner-8451. Happy to help where I can.

Based on the typo, it looks like you might be crafting your sources by hand. Wanted to offer up that WikiTree Sourcer can make these source citations in two clicks of a mouse, with the Ancestry sharing links and all the pretty formatting you've been doing as well. It's certainly not necessary to have it, but it can give you back a ton of hours of your time. :)

I reconnected that couple not sure when or where they married as couldn't see a source on either profile.

Which couple are you referring to please?

If this is in response to my Smith query then I obviously didn't explain the problem well enough.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:EditPerson&u=14016269 Smith-110640 has still got incorrect relationships with my Smiths: Smith-332582 is listed on the Edit family section as her father and Barton Smith-328679 and Ann Hatton Smith-332607 as siblings. They have nothing to do with this profile: Smith-332582.

She is removed from the Lancashire family and back with her Scottish parents now.

Hi Terry,

I formatted the sources on your profile for Robert (Fry) Frye (abt.1691-1762). The entire source citation should be enclosed by <ref> ... </ref>, not just the link. Also, you don't need to say "source:", because whatever is enclosed in the references tags will be included in the Sources section of the profile. You can find examples of source citations and usage of the reference tags on the help page for sources: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hello, Terry!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s VERY IMPORTANT to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Pip, nice to 'meet you'. I'm afraid I went in all guns blazing and have added a couple pre-1700 family profiles before reading about the Orphan Trail. I do always try to use a primary source but these are often on the 'familysearch' site. I have discovered also on Familysearch the 'Source Linker'. For my profile the Source Linker has a large number of names (siblings, children, parents) relating to my pre-1700 ancestor. What is not clear is are these extra names and dates sources, sourced or just someone else's tree? My instinct tells me to record them on my ancestors profile but don't recreate the tree on Wikitree. Is that correct or should I go ahead and add the profiles and reference familysearch Source Linker? I haven't come across this feature before and I see they have a new version they are testing out.

Terry

Hello, Terry!

The best thing to do is to see if there is an image for the source on Family Source. For lack of an image, you'll have to see if other relatives are transcribed from the image. Those would be the clues that the source is for the family you are researching.

You can add the profiles, but you will also want to use the citation for the document, not just like to the Family Search source linker. This will insure that when others want to see the documentation, they won't be just take to an FS page, but to the actual citation.

If this doesn't make sense, then send me a link for a pre-1700 profile you are working on so I can take a look.

Kind regards,

Pip

I think I sorted the profile for you there were spelling errors and I added inline sources. One was not correct so it was removed.

That profile has both inline and bulleted sources. This page explains about links and inline citations. There is also lots of information on this page.

Hi Terry,

You might want to investigate the apps under the find menu. They can help you with sourcing your profiles.

I saw your post about citing certificates and noticed you have English ancestry you could join a project. In the England Project we have the Orphan Trail which will help you to cite Free to access resources for those ancestors. There is a G2G post to join the project and the Orphan Trail will support you with a mentoring process.

Thanks for your welcome Victoria. I've never been on WIKI before today but am a Volunteer curator on Geni.com. so not unfamiliar with genealogy. Is there an easy way to copy my Geni tree - BLood Relatives to WIKI?
