Biography

If you believe the stereotypes, I am a Florida native descended from a NC Hillbilly father and Florida Cracker mother. After being drafted in 1943 at age 18 and serving during WW2 my father was discharged in 1946 from the U.S. Navy while stationed at the Atlantic Reserve (Mothball) Fleet in Green Cove Springs, Florida. The base was closed in the early 1960s and the ships moved elsewhere. Dad settled in Green Cove Springs, married a local girl and raised his family.

My mother, when she wasn't raising my sister and myself, worked as the Accounting Bookkeeper at the local High School. My father started with the Post Office in 1950 and retired as Postmaster at the Macclenney, Baker County, FL Post Office in 1983.

My mother (Nora Juanita Chesser) was a third generation Green Cove Springs native descended from the original settlers of Chesser Island in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp. Some of the surnames in my mother's tree are Owens, Conner, Dedge, Bentley, Falana, Prescott and others.

My father's Suttle line was primarily from the Dysartsville, McDowell County, NC area but with roots to Cleveland and Rutherford counties in NC and also Tennessee. Branches can be found in Burke County NC and down into SC. Surnames on my father's side include Dayberry, Upton, Wiseman, Washburn and more.

My Suttle tree is twisted and gnarled back into itself. The older sister (Margaret) of my great-grandfather Marcus Suttle married Daniel H. Upton. One of Daniel and Margaret's daughters (Preshia Dullcenia Upton) married Julius Weldon Dayberry. Their daughter Lottie Sophronia Dayberry married my grandfather Carl Franklin Suttle (son of Marcus Suttle). In addition, one of Lottie's sisters, Gazzi Novella Dayberry also married back into the Suttle tree. Gazzi's husband descended from one of Margaret's older half-brothers.

PS I added some sources to Carl Franklin Suttle's profile. FamilySearch.org is very useful for finding sources.

Hello Marc,

Have a look at the Get Started with DNA page for info about using DNA results.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:How_to_Get_Started_with_DNA

If you have already entered ancestors it will take about 24 hours for your test information to populate your profiles. As you add more profiles the information will continue to show up on all the appropriate ancestors' profiles. Click here for your results: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:DNATests

The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches, once you have done this any remaining names will need to be added manually.

You can find your GEDcom reports under the ‘My Wikitree’ drop-down menu at the top of the page. Click on the menu then choose GEDcoms. or use this link: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:UploadGedcom

Have a look at the GEDcom help pages. You should find useful info about uploading your tree.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GEDCOM

There is a limit of 5000 names with the GEDCOM. If your tree is large you may want to split it into smaller trees to make the task more manageable. Here is some info on splitting a tree.

https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Splitting-an-Ancestry-Family-Tree

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that many members have found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Let me know if you have any questions. If I don't know the answer, I will help you find someone who does. Peggy

Hi Marc,

A warm welcome to WikiTree. You are now a member and can add your family to the big tree!

Click here to start with our New Member How To Pages. They will save you time, energy and frustration as you add your family profiles.

I hope you enjoy WikiTree as much as I have. You never know when you will find a lost family member or ancestor. Or maybe find a hidden family secret about an ancestor. Genealogy to me is like being a detective looking for clues into the past.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm always happy to help!

As a new WikiTree user there are several questions I'm struggling with after several days of trying to understand without finding a clear answer using the WikiTree help functions:

1. DNA - I would expect there would be a mechanism to upload my AncestryDNA results directly to WikiTree. I have done this for other sites. For example, after downloading my AncestryDNA results as a file I then uploaded it to MyHeritage which resulted in receiving useful matches. There is plenty of discussion about DNA on WikiTree but so far I don't see this specific step.

2. Auto-population of my family tree - Starting with my own info, I have been able to enter enough tree data to start getting matches in WikiTree. Doesn't WikiTree then auto-populate my tree back beyond that point using what is already contained in the big "single tree" that exists? My concern is having to manually reenter the over 1600 individuals in the GED file I uploaded, even if it is just the name and dates, until Wikitree suggests matches. I have spent years assembling my tree and the idea of having to manually reenter every name is not appealing. I was hoping that somehow my GED file wold be used for building my tree.

Thanks, Marc Suttle
