Alexander was born before 1570. He is presently the first Laird in the Cambusavie line I have identified. Like his son-in-law David Sutherland of Rearquhar, it is likely he belonged to the wider Sutherland of Duffus family. It is probable that he was a natural son of Alexander Sutherland 8th Laird of Duffus.
Alexander was known to still be alive on 17th August 1636.
Cambusavie estate is located immediately to the west of Loch Fleet and the Mound. Cambusavie lies approximatey 3 miles west of Skelbo castle which was for generations a major stronghold of the Sutherland of Duffus family.
As with several other branches of the Sutherland family, the origins of the Sutherland of Cambusavie family have not yet been conclusively determined. Long thought to be a junior cadet branch of the Sutherland of Duffus family, the estate they occupied, Cambusavie, is the area lying on the south side of the Mound and Loch Fleet. The estate came within those properties in Sutherland long held by the Sutherland of Duffus family who for generations had their principal stronghold at Skelbo castle immediately to the south east of Cambusavie.
The close link to the Duffus chieftains can be seen on the number of occasions on which members of the Cambusavie family have acted as procurators or agents for Duffus family members in land and business transactions. The tree of which this profile forms part is aimed at linking the many descendants of this family and hopefully in due course their better known cousins in related families.
