James is a Life Member of the Clan Sutherland Society in Scotland since 1979 and is the current Clan Historian. He is a Member of the Heraldry Society of Scotland and The Pipe Roll Society and also The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy. He has a strong interest in DNA Research, Genealogy and Scottish History. He retired as a Company Director in 2007 He completed 12 years as a NCO in the Royal Engineers in 1973 serving in Germany, Kenya, Aden (Radfan),Singapore, Malaya and Thailand. After leaving the Army he held various positions in the Building (Ready-Mix Concrete and Sand and Gravel Industries), Electricity, Cement and Fly-Ash industries. He was an Associate Member of the Institute of Concrete Technology since 1978 and Vice President of the European Fly Ash Association and was awarded The Professional Certificate in Management by the Open University in 1995. In 2014 and 2015 He and J Mark Sutherland -Fisher submitted papers entitled "Exploring the Relationships among Some Key Flemish families" and "The Barony of Kerdale and its Links with some Key Moray Families" to Scotland and the Flemish People Project for St Andrews University. Recently 2019 he completed a article entitled "Freskin , Adventurous Fleming or Locator? Founder of the House of Moravia in Medieval Scotland" which has been published in the Journal of the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy. His early education was at Battlefield Primary and Croftfoot Primary Schools and later at Kings Park Sen Sec School. He married his wife in 1971 and has two sons and now two lovely granddaughters. He and his wife currently live in Symington Lanarkshire having recently moved from Biggar where they lived from 1976 till 2016 after being in East Kilbride for six years. James has contributed many articles for the Clan Magazine and been engaged in tracing his own Sutherland connections for over 40 years recently linking it to the Sutherlands of Duffus in Moray cadets of the Freskin Earls of Sutherland.
