Biography

Lillie Suskin has Jewish Roots.

Lillie was born in 1907 in New Bern, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Mark Suskin and Jennie, née Kramer.

In 1923 she was a senior at New Bern High School.^[1] In 1924 she was a freshman at the North Carolina College for Women in Greensboro^[2] and in 1925 a sophomore.^[3]

In 1926, she is listed as residing at 17 Metcalf St. (now 214 Metcalf St.).^[4] In 1937, she is listed as a bookkeeper at The Orringer Pickle Co. and as residing at 418 Rhems Ave. (now 1617 Rhem Ave.).^[5] After the death of her parents, she continued living there with her siblings Leon, Raymond, and Esther.

On 1 Dec 1941 Lillie purchased the house at 418 Rhems Ave. for $100 from Horace S. and Mary T. Rosser of Norfolk, Virginia.^[6] In the years prior to the purchase, the house was probably rented by the Suskin family.^[7]

In 1947-1948 and 1951-1952, Lillie is listed as a stenographer at The Orringer Pickle Co. and as residing at 1617 Rhem Ave.^[8][9] According to the 1950 census, she worked as a bookkeeper at a wholesale pickle factory.^[10] Later she worked as a manager at Jay Apparel, a dress factory in New Bern.^[11]

Lillie was active in the Temple B’nai Sholem and in the Sisterhood/Hadassah. She was unmarried. She died after surgery on 1 Oct 1954 and was buried on 3 Oct 1954 at United Hebrews of New Bern Cemetery.^[12][13][14]
