He was baptised on 9 December 1838 at St Mary, Denham Court, Cumberland, New South Wales, Australia.[1]
He attained the rank of Lieutenant in the Bombay Army.
At the age of 27 Charles married 19 year old Louisa Caroline Lawson (third daughter of Stephen Lawson of Longhirst, Northumberland of the 7th (Queen’s Own) Hussars) on 15 August 1865 at St Paul's District Church in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.
Tragically Louisa died in 1867 after child birth, along with her child. Charles was serving in the Abyssinian Campaign at the time.
Sturt-Sale - Aug. 25, at Bournemouth, Capt. Charles S. Sturt, Bombay Army, son of the late Capt. Sturt, the Australian explorer, to Florentia, daughter of Lieut.-Col. R. H. Sale, and granddaughter of the late Major-General Sir Robert Sale, G.C.B.[3]
They went on to have one daughter.
UK Census Event Date 1871: Recorded in the household of his mother in law Matilda Sale at Weymouth & Melcombe Regis, Melcombe Regis, Dorsetshire, England. Aged 32. Also in the household was his wife Florentia, and two servants.

Charles was gazetted as a Major General on 1 March 1891. He retired to Newport Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
UK Census Event Date 1891: Living at College Square, Cardiganshire, Wales. Aged 52. Also in the household was his 18 year old daughter Evelyn, niece Edith Broughton, one visitor and four servants.

UK Census Event Date 31 March 1901: Recorded at Melcombe Regis, Dorset, England. Also in the household were two servants. He was aged 62.

Charles passed away in 1910 at the age of about 72. [4]
DEATH OF MAJOR-GENERAL STURT
We regret to announce the death of Major-Gen. Charles S. Sturt, of Muddiford House, Barnstaple, which occurred yesterday. The deceased gentleman, who was born in 1838, served in the Abyssinian Campaign and Burmese Expedition, receiving medals, as well as being mentioned in dispatches.[5]
His will was proved on 10 February 1911 at Exeter to William Lock Mellersh, Solicitor, Reverend Wilfrid Abernethy Evers Austen, clerk and William Neville Sturt, esquire.[6] Effects: £7658 19s. 9d. Resworn £7966 4s. 4d.
