Johann Leonhard Stumpf was a Volga German.

Leonhard was born about 1729 in Kastel, Oberaltenbernheim, Bavaria, Germany.

Leonhard married Catherina.

He arrived in Kronstadt Island in the Russian Empire on the 9th of June 1766. His occupation was listed as a shoemaker. He and his family had travelled aboard the Mann und Frau which was skippered by Daniel Berg. Their son, Karl Ferdinand Stumpf, born in 1771 in Warenburg.[1]

Per the 1798 Warenburg census (line #11745) Leonhard, a widower, was sixty-nine years old.[1] His son Karl was in the home, with his wife Sophia Scherer and their three children.[1] The 1811 Warenburg census stated that he had died in 1802.

Research Notes

Warenburg 1st Settler’s List by Igor Pleve 12 May 1767 #39 Leonhard Stromer/Stumpf is listed as 39 years old. Making his birth year 1728. See AHSGR Go project he is listed as Stumpf/Stromer. Per Sharon White Warenburg village coordinator Igor Pleve made a translator mistake, his surname is Stumpf.

From a descendant:

  • Johann Leonhard Stumpf/Stromer arrived in Warenburg (Priwalnjoe Kanton Seelman, Russia) . Founded in 1767 by Lutherans on Wiesenseite of the Volga River. Per 1811 Warenburg census Johann DOB 1729 & DOD 1802. 18 June 1766 per Ivan Kulberg he is on the Colonist list, along with his wife Catharina, children Jacob 2.5, Catharina 3.5 and father in law Peter Stumpf. Johann was a shoemaker from KASSEL. 12 May 1767 Igor Pleve has the family listed on his 1st Settler’s List. He has him listed as from KASTEL? Oberaltenbernheim. Warenburg 1798 census listed as a widower & on 1811 Warenburg census it says he died 1802.
  • Per Dr Brent Alan Mai (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__Volga.domains.UNF.EDU&d=DwIGaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=StilzjOiLCq9l8XqGr_VFw&m=fIb7F5eRm9fnXzOFsybpvUNxa8I-K4gHyNsj9QBAW7I&s=q2ZO3XGirho3uFriAdgYzImMdCEL3hc3ADFLkZ0s7BM&e=) he list Leonhard Stumpf pre-Volga Origin as Oberaltenbernheim, Kreis Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim,Bayern. Leonhard Stumpf a cobbler, his wife Katharine, children, Katharine & Jacob and his father in law Peter Stumpf arrived from Lubeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 18 June 1766 aboard the ship Mann und Frau.
  • My questions are all 3 places listed the same village and where the heck is it? Is there a possibility of finding any Church records for this family or their ancestors. I have no ideas if there would be any additional info on this family. I would appreciate any info that you might find.
  • FYI Dr Karl Stumpf in his book listed the surname Stumpf (never Stump) belonging to the oldest families in the Parish of Ebermergen and could trace back to the beginning of the Church books 1656. With my luck, probably not any of my relatives.

All of the Volga German colonies on the Wiesenseite then became a part of the Samara Province, where they remained until 1928 when the imperial provinces were dissolved. Travel Document #1153 in the Kulberg Reports.
Family #39 in the 1767 Warenburg census.
Family #75 in the 1798 Warenburg census.

Leonhard Stumpf was born about 1728 in Kassel, Hesse, Germany. He immigrated to Russia in 1766 and settled in the village of Warenburg. He is identified in the 1798 census as being 69 years of age. He passed away some time after 1798, probably in the village of Warenburg.

Leonhard and his family immigrated to Russia in 1766. Their immigration is documented in the Kulberg Reports. The family departed from Luebeck, Germany, and sailed to St. Petersburg, Russia, arriving on 18 June 1766. The ship they traveled on was the "Mann und Frau" which was skippered by Daniel Berg. [2]

Travel Document # 1153
Head of the Household Leonhard Stumpf, Lutheran shoemaker from Kassel
Wife Catharina Stumpf
Child #1 Jacob Stumpf, age 2 years 6 months
Child #1 Catharina Stumpf, age 3 years 6 months
Father in Law Peter Stumpf

This record implies that Leonhard's wife Catharina was born Catharina Stumpf and may have been a cousin or other relative. There is also the chance that Peter Stumpf was Leonhard's father, not his wife's father, and that he was simply misidentified and given the wrong surname.

Immigrants spent the fall and winter months in Oranienbaum, and began their perilous journey to the Volga River region in the spring and summer months. Many immigrants did not survive the brutal winter, nor the journey east. Leonhard did survive and settled in the colony of Warenburg.

In the 1766 Warrenburg census, the family's surname was misspelled as "Strömer. At that time, daughter Catharina's name was not included with the rest of the family. Since she would have been only 4 years old at the time of the census, she was probably not living with another family. She likely did not survive the journey to the Volga River colonies or died shortly after her arrival but before the census was taken. Also not listed was his father in law Peter, who either married and was living in a different household, possibly in a different village, or was deceased. If Peter's surname was not Stumpf, it's possible he was still living in Warenburg but under his real surname. In 1767, he would have been about 57 to 67 years old.

I don't have a copy of the 1775 Warrenburg census, but the Leonhard and Katharina had at least one more child, Karl Ferdinand, who was born in 1771. He is named in the 1798 Warenburg census and identified as a widower, living with his son Karl Ferdinand, his daughter in law, and his grandchildren. [5] It's possible he had additional children, but none were living in Warenburg in 1798.
