Biography

Daniel Stump was born in Pennsylvania on May 1, 1790, and was fourteen years of age when he went to Canada. He grew to manhood and married there, and in 1838, headed a colony of Canadians who emigrated to Elkhart County, making the entire journey overland with wagons and teams. Daniel Stump was a man of considerable wealth for that day and generation and purchased thirteen tracts of land of eighty acres each for the benefit of his children. For his own home he erected a log house on the southwest quarter of section 24 in Union Township. He was a leader in the River Brethren Church held the office of bishop and in the early days rode a wide circuit to look after the interests of the church. When not attending to his pastoral duties he superintended the clearing of his land and was a prominent citizen of Union Township until his death May 7, 1877. He had then reached the venerable age of eighty seven. Bishop Daniel Stump was married in Canada to Sally Smith and they reared thirteen children namely John Mariah Abraham Samuel Jacob Daniel Susan Joseph Benjamin Soloman Sally Jonathan and Noah.[1]

Daniel Stump, son of Abraham Stump & his wife Maria Merkley Stump.

...about 1838 Daniel Stump and wife united with the church. In the third decade they resided in Vaughan, west side of the river Humber farthest west of any of the brethren of Markham District but from there in the year 1839 with family moved to the State of Indiana, visited us pretty regular. He was at our (Canadian) lovefeast in this part in 1843, 1846, 1848, 1860 and 1865.

He with one of his daughters paid us a visit, but met with a sad calamity, whereas his daughter while here took sick and died, and was laid to rest in the bretherns' graveyard in the Township of Vaughan.

A Concise Review and Brief History of the Church at Present Known by Her Adopted Name, Brethren in Christ, Formerly Known by the Appelation River Brethren or Tunkers probably written by Jonathan Baker

The Union Grove Brethren in Christ Church (BIC, not COB) near New Paris, IN, USA celebrated its centennial 9 June 1985 for the church building. This congregation had its beginnings in 1839 when Elder Daniel Stump led a group of people to this area from Gromley, Ontario, Canada.

Among the numbers of that early group were the Cobers, Heiseys, Mishlers, Shirks & Frengers.

Elder Stump became the first overseer (River Brethren) & through this small group the establishment of the present church was realized.

Before a Church building was erected, services were held in houses of the members in the community. General Conference was held there in 1918. Dinner was served to 1000 people the Sunday of that Conference.

Solomon Stump (son of Daniel)...He was born in Canada August 26, 1830, being the tenth of thirteen children reared by Daniel and Sally (Smith) Stump, the father having been born in Pennsylvania, May 1, 1790, and died at the advanced age of eighty-seven years, in Elkhart county.

His parents (Daniel's parents), Abraham and Mary (Meekley) Stump reared a family of two daughters and six sons, and at the time of their removal to Canada, Daniel was only fourteen years old He was reared on British soil with his brothers and sisters whose names are as follows: Solomon, David, Samuel, Jacob, Joseph, Lizzie and Susan, he being the second (son) of the family.

(Daniel) Upon reaching man's estate he was married, and in 1838 moved to Elkhart county, Ind, making the journey thither by wagon, as did many other Canadian families, and as he had been brought up to a knowledge of farming it was but natural that he should devote his attention to that calling upon taking up his residence in this section.

His marriage with Miss Smith resulted in the birth of the following children:

  • John, who is farming in Kosciusko county, has a large family;
  • Mariah, who married Joshua Yoder, who is deceased;
  • Abraham is also deceased;
  • Samuel, deceased;
  • Jacob is living in Nebraska;
  • Daniel, deceased;
  • Susan,
  • Joseph
  • Benjamin died in Canada;
  • Solomon;
  • Sally, now Mrs Brown, of Union township;
  • Jonathan;
  • Noah is farming in Noble county.

Upon the arrival of the Stump family in this section, they settled on the farm on which the subject of this sketch is residing, and they began energetically to clear the land and break the soil. They erected a log house with a puncheon floor, and they had considerable means upon coming here. The early life here was not marked with as many hardships as usually fall to the lot of the pioneer settler, although they had to put up with many inconveniences and were compelled to labor early and late in order to clear the large amount of land which they owned, which consisted of thirteen eighty acre tracts. The founder of the family in this section paid the last debt of nature on May 7, 1877, having for many years been a bishop of the River Brethren Church, having charge of a circuit at the time of his death...

Note: none of the children have a middle name or initial.

Also for son Solomon to be 10 of 13 children, his brothers Joseph & Benjamin would be born before him
