FATAL STREET ACCIDENT EVENING POST, VOLUME XCVIII, ISSUE 81, 7 OCTOBER 1919, PAGE 8 KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR-CAR. An inquiry was held by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M;, yesterday afternoon and this morning into the circumstances which led up to the death of Mr. Thomas Smith, a retired farmer, 77 years of age, at the Wellington Hospital on Saturday afternoon following his admittance for treatment for injuries sustained on the night of 22nd September, when he was knocked down by a motor-car driven by Norman Edwin Page, taxi-proprietor, in Courtenay-place. Senior-Sergeant Willis appeared for the police, and Mr. J. Scott on behalf of the driver of the car. Dr. Buckley, house surgeon at the Hospital, said that the deceased made good progress after an operation performed, and had been up for some three days when he took a bad turn and died on Saturday afternoon. It was probable that death was due to heart trouble accelerated by shock. The driver of the car gave evidence that the night on which the accident occurred was particularly rough and stormy. As the car was crossing the foot of Majoribanks-street at a very slow pace not more than four or five miles per hour —witness felt a bump and the car pulled up of its own accord within half a length. Deceased was then found lying underneath the front of the car, but did not appear to be seriously injured as he got into the car almost with out assistance. Witness motored deceased to Dr. Smythe's, and later to the Hospital. Edwin Maurice Lodge, who was in the car at the time, gave evidence corroborative of that of the driver. John Bishop Gauntlett, an eye-witness, said that he heard a warning given by Page, and turning round, saw the car travelling at a very slow pace with head lights dimmed as required by the by-laws. It was his impression that the deceased had crossed in front of the car and had then turned back into its track. He did not consider that the driver was in any way to blame. This morning the Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to heart failure. The deceased gentleman, who was born at Cork, Ireland, in 1842, arrived in Wellington in January 1855 with his parents, and went through the hard work of pioneers in the early days in the Horokiwi and Otaki districts. Of late years he had lived in Wellington. A man of genial disposition, he was regarded by all who knew him with high esteem. He was an active member of the Early Settlers' Association, from which he will be greatly missed. His late wife, a daughter of the late Mr. Charles Stuart, of Pahautanui, predeceased him some years ago. He leaves a family of two sons (recently returned from active service) and two daughters.[8] [15]
