John Stuart (1st Marquess of the County of Bute) was born on 30 June 1744 at Mount Stuart, Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland. He was the son of John Stuart (3rd Earl of Bute) and his wife Mary Wortley-Montagu (Baroness Mount Stuart of Wortley).

He was created 1st Baron Cardiff of Cardiff Castle [Great Britain] on 20 May 1776, in recognition of his vast South Wales properties.

He was styled as Viscount Mount Stuart in 1783.

On 10 March 1792 he succeeded to the titles of 4th Lord Mountstuart, Cumra and Inchmarnock, 6th Baronet Stuart of Bute, 4th Earl of Bute and Viscount Kingarth.

On 6 November 1794 he succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Mount Stuart of Wortley.

On 27 February 1796 he was created 1st Earl of Windsor, 1st Marquess of the County of Bute and 1st Viscount Mountjoy, of the Isle of Wight , commemerating his first wife's parentage.

He died on 16 November 1814 at age 70 at Geneva, Switzerland.

Career

He held the office of Member of Parliament for Bossiney between 1766 and 1776. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Glamorganshire between 1772 and 1793. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor in 1779. He was Envoy to Turin between 1779 and 1783. He held the office of Auditor of the Imprest between 1781 and 1782. He held the office of Ambassador to Spain between March 1783 and December 1783. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Bute between 1794 and 1814. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Glamorganshire between 1794 and 1814. He held the office of Ambassador to Spain between 1795 and 1796. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 12 December 1799. He held the office of Counsellor of State [Scotland] to the Prince of Wales in 1806.

Marriage

On 12 November 1766 at St. John's Chapel, St. George Hanover Square, London, England, John Stuart was married firstly to Hon. Charlotte Jane Windsor the daughter of Herbert Hickman-Windsor (2nd Viscount Windsor of Blackcastle) and his wife Alice Clavering.

On 17 September 1800 at Stratton Street, St. George Hanover Square, London, England, he married, secondly, Frances Coutts the daughter of Thomas Coutts and Susan Starkie.
