Biography
Samuel Strong is Notable.
Sir Samuel Henry Strong was one of the original justices of the Supreme Court of Canada from its formation in 1875. He served as the 3rd Chief Justice of the Court.
Samuel Henry Strong was born in Hamworthy, County of Dorset, in England in 1825. He was baptized on August 18th, 1826. His parents were listed on his baptismal record as Samuel Spratt Strong and Jane Elizabeth Strong. Samuel was a rope-maker by trade.[1][2] S
Samuel's family emigrated to Canada in 1836 from England. His father, Reverend Samuel Spratt Strong, reportedly ministered to the troops at Quebec, and later became rector in Bytown (now Ottawa). It was while the family was living in Quebec that Samuel completed his high school education. He received his law education from private tutors in Toronto and Bytown. He began practicing law in 1849.[3]
By 1857, Samuel was living in Toronto.[4] In 1861, Samuel Henry Strong, aged 36, was enumerated with his wife, Elizabeth Charlotte Strong, aged 28, and their two children, Alice (10) and Lucy (9) in Toronto, Canada West. Samuel's occupation was barrister.[5]
Samuel H. Strong listed his occupation as "Vice-Chancellor" on the census of 1871. Both he and his wife, Elizabeth, reported that they were foreign-born -- Samuel in England, Elizabeth in Ireland. They had two servants living in their Toronto home.[6] Samuel had been serving as Vice-Chancellor of the Court of Chancery since 1869. In 1874, he went on to serve on the Ontario Court of Error and Appeal. 1875 saw the institution of the newly formed Supreme Court of Canada with Strong as one of the first pusine judges. [7]
Strong was promoted to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in late 1892. He was also honored with a knighthood in 1893, and served on his Majesty's Privy Council in 1897.[8]
Sir S.H. Strong died on August 31, 1909 at the age of 84. He had resigned the court in 1902 to undertake other governmental roles. Prior to his resignation, he was the last of the original jurists left on the court.[9]
