Frederick was born at Stepney, Middlesex, England, in 1834, the son of Benjamin Bockett Turner, a clerk of Bow, London, and Elizabeth Maria Storrs of Edinburgh, and baptised at the Bull Lane Independent, aka Stepney Meeting House, a nonconformist church in Stepney.[1]
Frederick Turner LMS was born in Stepney, Middlesex, England.
Frederick married Sophia Mary Harmer in Canton, China, on the 4th of December 1860. The event was published in Norwich, Norfolk, England, newspapers on the 2nd February 1861.[2]
They were to have eight known children, three daughters, and five sons:
In 1901, the family were living at East Grinstead, Sussex with their son Alfred, his wife, and a servant.[4]
After 461/2 years of marriage, Sophia was to leave Frederick "alone" when she died in June 1907.
In 1911, Frederick, a Widowed Author, was living with his daughters, Helen and Gertrude, and a servant, at East Grinstead, Sussex.[5]
Frederick became known as an anti-drug campaigner — specifically against opium, and the opium trade. Having spent many years in China as a missionary, he would have witnessed at first-hand what dependence on the drug could do. He was to publish a number of other essays and monographs opposing the opium trade; and was to help found the Society for the Suppression of the Opium Trade, becoming its secretary. Although a non-conformist, he was not a Quaker as were many other anti-drug campaigners.
The Reverend Frederick Storrs Turner passed away at Hitchin, Herefordshire, in 1916.[6][7]
