Biography

National Flag of Wales
George Stokes was born in Wales.

George was born about 1700. He was a member of the Stokes family of Pembrokeshire, Wales; many of whom were educated at Jesus College, Oxford and went on to become clergymen.

On 5 June 1726 George was awarded a BA from Jesus College, Oxford and was ordained a deacon of the Church of England. [1] On 16 June 1728 he was awarded his MA and was ordained a priest.

After his ordination George became a curate at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. [1] It was there that he probably met Mary Michell who became his wife. There is however no record of their marriage in the Cheltenham parish registers.

Between 1730 and about 1740 Mary gave birth to nine children, six of whom survived infancy. Most of the children were baptised at Cheltenham; it is possible that the others were born and baptised in Pembrokeshire.

George was a trustee of the will of his brother Anthony Stokes of Rosemarket, Pembrokeshire which was written 30 Mar 1732. Other siblings mentioned in the same will include a brother Nicholas and a sister Dorothy.

In 1740 George was recorded as being the rector of the parishes of Cosheston and Lawrenny in Pembrokeshire. He had by this time given up his curacy in Cheltenham.

The Church of England Database records that both these living were vacated on the death of George on 1 Aug 1751. [1] [2]No burial record has yet been locate, although in a 1756 document he was described as having been "late of Cosheston, Pembrokeshire". [3]
