Edward Frederick Stevens was born on 24 December 1884, his birth being registered in 1885 at Amersham, Buckinhamshire[1]. He was the son of Edward Stevens and Elizabeth Amanda Smith.
In the 1901 England Census, Edward Fredk Stevens (aged 16, a Railway Worker) was recorded living with his father Edward Stevens (41, Schoolmaster), his mother Elizabeth Amanda Stevens (47) and his two younger siblings Constance Fredk Stevens (14) and Stanley Douglas Stevens (8) at the School House in Latimer, Buckinghamshire[2].
Edward emigrated from England to New Zealand in about 1912. He married Lenora Christina Morgan in 1916. They went on to have at least three children.
When the 1st World War broke out, he was employed as a Bookkeeper for Thompson Brothers in Wellington. He enlisted on 14 June 1917 in Wellington. His next of kin was recorded as Mrs E.F. Stevens (wife), 366A Tinakori Road, Wellington, New Zealand. Service No: WWI 62459
Edward served as a Lance Corporal with the 35th Reinforcements, B Company, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. 29 March 1918 was his Embarkation date on the vessel Tofua to Southampton, England.
He was discharged on 23 November 1919 after having served for 2 years and 120 days, and was entitled to the British War Medal.
Edward Frederick Stevens passed away on 24 August 1945 and was cremated at Karori Cemetery and Crematorium, Wellington, New Zealand[3]. His ashes were interred at Karori Cemetery and Crematorium[4]. PLOT: Soldier Niche 37 DIV A1
