Ludwig was born in 1935 as the son of Ludwig Steurenthaler and Marie Hercher in Freiburg. On his birthday his mother went from Ramselehof to Bärental (currently: part of Feldberg (Schwarzwald)) by ski, from where the taxi was supposed to get her to the hospital in Freiburg. So he almost came to the world on ski.
This is the story that was usually told when somebody asked why Ludwig was already able to ski at age of three. He was named after his father, because his previously born sister Maria had the same name as her mother.[1]
In February 1938 his family moved to Hanselehof in Alpersbach (part of Hinterzarten). There he was sometimes sent to get the horses from the Engel-inn, for working at his home, which he also was able to at that age.
In school he was sitting next to his later brother-in-law for some time.[2] School was in Hinterzarten, so he had to walk about six kilometers from Alpersbach. In winter, on the way back, his oldest sister would walk towards him from home, get his backpack and put one of his hands in her pocket, in order to warm them up again. She often heard him crying already, before seeing him.[3]
At around 1946 he was working at Micheldummelehof, first as a herdsboy (Hirtenbub), later as a farmhand. In 1948 him and his family came back to Ramselehof. There he got injured and was paralyzed from the waist down. Somebody went to Häuslebauernhof, where they already had a phone, in order to get help. Dr. Butter came and took him. Later he came to Freiburg, where he was treated and was able to walk again after four weeks.
In 1960 he got married.[4] He wanted to take over Ramselehof, but his father refused, because he didn't accept with Ludwig's bride – either because she was a poor refugee from East Prussia and/or because she was Protestant. Later he built a house in Alpersbach in an area where three other new houses were being built, one of them by his cousin Ernst Schwörer. Him and his wife had two children.
Like his father, Ludwig was working as a lumberjack. In his spare time he made wooden shingles.
He got sick with prostate cancer and passed away in his home on 18 September 1998[5] and was interred in Hinterzarten.[6]
