Immigration

Mary immigrated to New York (Ellis Island) on June 1 1898 on the ship "Bremen" which departed from Bremen (page 0514). She lived in Manhattan, New York City on Attorney Street and worked as a domestic maid for the Klein family (the same Klein family from Jablonca) before she moved to Michigan by 1899 to marry Joseph Nagy.

When Joseph and Mary lived in Toledo, their name was spelled NAGGE in earlier records. Joseph also always reported that he was from Austria in many American records (as in the Austria-Hungary Dual Monarchy). However, records show that they both were born in the same village in Hungary which has changed borders twice since they left Hungary (once located in Czechoslovakia, presently located in Slovakia since 1993).

Mary (23) married Joseph Nagy (25) (born on July 19, 1874 in Jablonca, Hungary; son of Istvan Nagy and Susanna (Sebő) Nagy) on September 18, 1899 in Del Ray, Wayne Co., Michigan. Their children were:

They lived in Del Ray (Detroit), Wayne, Michigan, eventually settling in the Birmingham section of Toledo, Ohio where their children were baptized/christened at St. Stephen's Church (the girls) or the Hungarian Reformed Church (the boys) at Birmingham.

By 1908, they moved out to Clay Center in Ottawa county where Joseph Nagy worked at the Lime Quarry.

Then they moved back to the city of Toledo:

Susie N clerk Woolworth's h1403 Ironwood[3]

When their son, Louis, bought land in East Toledo (which eventually became Northwood, Ohio), they also (or their children) bought plots nearby on Anderson Street. Their daughter, Marie Nagy, also moved there in her own home with her husband and children, to 909 Gould St. by 1950.

Mary died on June 28, 1955 in Oregon City, Lucas, Ohio, United States, aged 79. There were complications after a leg amputation. She was buried in Willow Cemetery, Oregon, Ohio.

  • Naturalization Records of Joseph Nagy. Joe Nagy gave this date in his Petition for Naturalization in 1942.
  • This marriage date was located in a Nagy Family Hungarian Bible that was possessed by the original family. This marriage date was copied down by various members of the family, however, no certificate has been located for this marriage in the general Michigan Civil Records database. The first child, who would be Maria Nagy, born to them in the United States was baptized in All Saints Catholic Church in Detroit. It seems the priest would have to verify a marriage with the strict rules of the Catholic church to process child's baptism. All Saints church office reported negative on marriage record. Maria Sterman was born Catholic; Nagy was Protestant so other types of churches in Detroit should be persued
