John was born in 1949 in Mildura. His father, Fred, worked for the National Australia Bank and with his mother, Ruth, they lived in Mildura for approximately four years. As a child he shifted regularly as was the policy of the bank at that time and lived in many locations in Victoria. These included Camperdown, Shepparton, Swan Hill, Cobden, Dunkeld and Macarthur. He attended nine different primary and secondary schools. John lived in Geelong and Torquay while training to be a primary teacher. He later lived in Morwell, Gormandale and Traralgon. John joined the Victorian teaching service and spent all of his 46 years teaching in and around the Latrobe Valley area. John has a wife (Susan) and three sons.

John's sister, Judi, died as a result of a car accident in December 1977. John's mother Ruth was killed instantly in the same accident.
