Biography

Burpee was born in 1863. He was the son of Frederick Steeves and his wife Jerusha (Bishop) Steeves.

Burpee was a medical doctor aged 30 when he married his first wife, Julia A Bishop, on 23 Oct 1895^[1][2]. Unfortunately, she passed away before they had been married even a year.

On 13 Sep 1899, he married his second wife, Bertha Coonan^[3].

In 1901, he was enumerated with his wife Bertha and his son W Burpee Steeves^[4].

In 1906?

In 1911, he was enumerated in Claresholm, Alberta, with his wife, both sons, and a 3 year old niece named Dora.

In 1911, the Claresholm newspaper carried his ad (top rh corner).

In 1916, he was enumerated

In 1916, during WW1, he completed his Attestations Papers, in his case Officers Declaration Papers, at Medicine Hat and at Calgary, (though he was living at Claresholm, Alberta), and was declared fit for duty. He went overseas with a company of Mounted Rifles, but was invalided out with sciatica and myalgia, and sent home. His entire military record, including pay slips, can be found at the Canadian Library and Archives here. It is a large file, so give it time to load.

It seems that some of his time was spent on the staff of the Canadian Hospital at Etchinghill, Kent^[5]

His military records give two different years of birth, 1864 and 1866. The day is the same.

In 1926, he was enumerated with his wife, two sons, and the young family of his son Nathaniel.^[6]

He passed away in 24 Oct 1941 in Calgary, and is buried in Calgary. ^[7]
