Luther was born in 1811. He passed away in 1874.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

DISCHARGED FOR DISABILITY AFTER 11 MONTHS - The first of Luther Stafford’s ancestors to come to Massachusetts came from Warwickshire, England, about a hundred miles northwest of London in the mid-1600s. By 1811, when Luther was born, his branch of the family had migrated through New England to settle in Peru. By the time Luther enlisted in the 96th Infantry in Ellenburg in November 1861, he had buried his first wife, Ruth Thew, in 1849, and married Mary Place who had been widowed in 1850. At the time of his enlistment, he was working as a wheelwright and had eleven children ranging in age from a 29-year-old living in the Town of AuSable to a new-born living in Ellenburg.

When Luther enlisted, like many other men, he told the recruiter he was 44 years old, a year under the maximum age to enlist. He was actually 50 years old and did get to Virginia to fight on the Peninsula. A couple of months after the conclusion of the Seven Days’ Battles, he was discharged for disability at Fort Monroe. He came home to Ellenburg Center and continued to work in the wagon trade. His last child, Ella Mary, was born in 1866.

Luther died in Ellenburg in 1874 and was buried in the Hutchins Cemetery in Ellenburg Center. Mary applied for a pension for herself and Ella the late 1880s bur neither was granted. In 1896, a military headstone was placed on his grave.
