1910-Dec-15, Veteran Answers Last Bugle Call, “The Chronicle-Telegram”

Charles B. Spring Expires at Home Where He Had Lived for Many Years.
After an illness covering the last two years Charles B. Spring, 68, one of Elyria’s oldest and best known citizens, past away about 3:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at his home, 249 East Fifth street. Death was due to chronic hepatitis.
The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon, the time and place to be announced later, Rev. T. W. Grose officiating.
The deceased was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He remained with that regiment until it disbanded when he was transferred to the famous 105th Regiment, the deeds of which have been so vividly described in “The Story of a Thousand.” This was known as the “Acorn” regiment, the deceased being a member of Co. D. He was wounded in the shoulder in the battle of Perrysburg, the scar of which he bore until his death.
Mr. Spring was not a member of any church, but he affiliated with the Methodist denomination, of which his wife is a member. He belonged to the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias lodges and was at the time of his death one of the trustees of Elyria township. He was a staunch Republican all his life, always supporting his party regardless of candidates.
For forty-five years Mr. Spring lived on the same lot on Fifth street, moving from an older house into a new dwelling a number of years ago.
He is survived by his wife and two children: Mrs. Nellie Todd, 393 Furnace street, and Dr. C. E. Spring of Struthers, O. He also leaves five grandchildren. [14]

1910-Dec-16, “The Chronicle-Telegram”

1910-Dec-19, Fire Bell Tolled to Honor Veteran, “The Chronicle-Telegram”

During Funeral Procession of Charles Spring Gong Sounded Slowly.
After the obsequies of the late Charles B. Spring at the First M. E. Church, Sunday afternoon, and while the procession was moving along Court street to Washington avenue, the fire alarm bell was tolled at intervals of several seconds in his honor, the late civil war veteran having been a member of the Lorain County Veteran Firemen’s Association.
The fire bell had not been tolled for a funeral service in two or three years, and at first many people thought there had been an alarm turned in. The slow and steady manner in which the bell sounded was somewhat unusual, and the anxious ones were soon assured there was no conflagration. [16]
