Stephen was born in Wooburn, Buckinghamshire in 1806 [1]
He married Ruth Sutton (1821 -1905) in Worksop in Q3 1851 [2], and they had 4 children.
In 1851 Stephen was curate of St Peter's, Sheffield (1851 Census)[3], and it seems likely that that is where he met Ruth. At the time he was lodging with the Vicar of Sheffield, Thomas Sale. And at this time he applied for a passport [4]
In 1861 (census - [5]) they were living in Woodnesbrough, Kent, where Stephen was the curate. They had three children at this point in time, and grandmother Sophia was living with them. The census gives her surname as Spicer, and she was from Harleston, Norfolk so it was most probably actually his mother Sophia (born in Norfolk, died in Kent, so that would fit).
And they were obviously doing well, as they could afford two live-in servants.
In the 1881 census he was still in Woodnesbrough, although 'without cure of souls' by that time (he was 75) [6]
At some point in his last few years he moved to Hastings, Sussex, where he was buried in 1885[7]
There was a Hastings, Sussex connection via another branch of the Spicers was also living there at that time, see Augustus John Spicer (Spicer-1852), who's wife was from Hastings. However it seems unlikely that this was the reason for the move to Hastings, as Augustus John's family were a few miles away in Rye.
And there appear to have been a number of Spicer families of different origins in the Hastings area, including a couple who had moved there as servants.
