Patrick Henry Spear, known as Henry, was born 5 Oct 1874 in Freshwater, California[1][2], son of Arnold Call Spear (1824-1892) and Nancy (1840-1884), daughter of Shasepee, a Wiyot Medicine Man. Henry was a registered member of the Wiyot tribe of Indians, with 1/2 blood[3]. As a child he was sent to the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon. There he learned the trades of blacksmithing and horse shoeing. He also learned from his father how to play the violin, and learned boxing from friends[4].
Starting in 1903, Henry is mentioned frequently in the Humboldt Times as providing violin music for various social events[5]. Starting the following year, he was heavily promoted as a boxer[6], and later as a trainer of boxers. These were weekend activities, as during the week he operated a blacksmith shop in Freshwater. In his spare time, Henry built stringed instruments and trained dogs and horses. A cello that he had made was donated to the Clarke Historical Museum in Eureka[7].
In the 1910 Census, Henry and his half-brother Andrew Johnson Spear were listed as roomers at 707 C Street in Eureka, a household headed by Amanda Ida Alvina Maas (1877-1953). Henry and Ida were married on 15 Aug 1912 in Eureka[8]. On 7 Apr 1914 there is a mention of Ida and her daughter Lillian boarding a steamer for Oregon[9]. This is the last mention of Ida that has been found in connection with Henry, except for their divorce, which was final on 19 Aug 1919[10].
On 6 Dec 1919 in Eureka[11], Henry married Alice Mabel (Noah) Hodges (1872-1958). Both had recently divorced, and had been friends for a few years[12][13]. They established a home and blacksmith shop at Alliance, later included in Arcata[4]. Alice could play the piano and banjo, joining Henry in his entertainment gigs. Alice passed away in Arcata on 30 Nov 1958 age 86[14]. Henry passed away there on 7 Mar 1972, age 97[15][16][17][18].
