Biography

John was the son of Valentine Spawr and Ann M. Richter. He was born in Ohio. The family removed to the Money Creek Township in Illinois in 1827. In 1831, he was married to Rachel Higgs. She died in 1845 and remarried the following year to Mary A. Pickering.

John was the father of thirteen children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. He served as both Justice of the Peace and school trustee for his township. According to his obituary, he "was for years a member of the United Brethren church at Pleasant Hill, while his wife was born and reared a Quaker."^[1]
