This is a work project of the US Black Heritage Project to enumerate all early Black members of the LDS Church.

On January 16, 1852, Brigham Young declared to the Utah Territorial Legislature that any man having one drop of the seed of Cain in him could not hold the priesthood. Due to this "one drop" policy, between 1844 and 1977, most Black people were not permitted to participate in ordinances performed in the LDS Church temples including the endowment ritual, celestial marriages, and family sealings. The LDS Church also opposed interracial marriage.
