How about adding Professional Wrestling or are we not "sporty" enough? lol
posted on Notables: Sports Project (merged) by Lori (Beckett) Zukerman
Ok, here's the controversy. It was recently decided that although professional wrestlers are clearly world class athletes, the primary pro wrestling organization, WWE, is not a sports entity, but rather an entertainment organization. (Thus the name World Wrestling Entertianment). WWE has no rules; it has no independent governing body; it is heavily scripted; and outcomes are pretty much pre-determined. This is very different than amateur college and high school wrestling, or even UFC, which are all clearly sports. Thus, Professional Wrestling can be found on the Notables Entertainment Page, not its Sports Page.

[As per Wikipedia: "Professional wrestling is a form of theater that revolves around mock combat performed in a squared ring. The storylines are typically based around interpersonal conflicts between good-natured "faces" and villainous "heels". The ring is the main stage; additional scenes may be recorded for television in backstage areas of the venue, in a format similar to reality television."]

WWE may have been THE show for years, but they certainly aren’t the best and don’t represent the sport as a whole. I stopped watching them years ago because they’re BORING. You want athletes that are amazing to watch? Catch some Lucha Libre! Those guys are freaking amazing! Back flips, back flip with a twist off the top rope, hurricanranas…Just amazing to watch. AEW, ECW back in the day and ROH…not scripted to the extent of WWE. Sure they might predetermine the outcome BUT I’ve seen an injury totally change that as the match is in progress. Watched one a couple of weeks ago and both wrestlers ended up with concussions during the match which I’m pretty sure changed the outcome. Put it out for discussion please. I do need the advertising and I’d love to see the discussion.

By the way, Vince McMahon went the sports entertainment route because the rules and regulations plus taxes and fees varied from state to state and he felt they were above all that.

We also start a category for rugby https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Springboks in the South African roots project!

Hey there David, I would very much like to become a member of this sub-project, with many great sports figures in mind in my bucket list queue! And thanks for making me aware of the existence of this in the first place.

Brian, I've sent you a private email so we can discuss options for participation.

How about a category for Curling? It has Olympic, World and more. I think it should be separate from Winter Sports...
posted on Notables: Sports Project (merged) by Christol James
We may disolve Winter Sports as we determine which winter sports have enough interest to warrant their own categories. We also may shift the category to a Winter Olympics theme.

In order for curling to get its own page we would need to things: 1) A volunteer to lead it, and 2) Enough notable curlers to justify a project. Any volunteers?

Please further divide "field hockey" and "ice hockey". These are two separate Olympic sports. Thank you.

I don't see Aussie Rules Footy listed.

Now you do! Any interest in leading a Aussie Rules team?
posted on Notables: Sports Project (merged) by David Randall
I'll consider it, being as it is my fave spectator sport next to cricket. If it helps any, the categories on Ron Jr are mostly Aussie Rules.

I guess I kinda decided to say "yes", seeing I created a space page as a start on the AFL.

Will your "rugby" be divided into Union, and League as separate codes?
posted on Notables: Sports Project (merged) by Melanie Paul
In time, each sport will be assigned a "commissioner" (coordinator). The commissioner's job will be to pull together a team and steer the direction of the individual sport project. Once we have a rugby team, they can decide how best to divide the project.

You might want to get in touch with the New Zealand Project, as they've had their All Blacks for some while now.
