The Mutiny on the Bounty.

The "Mutiny on the Bounty" is well-known but the story behind it, to many, has been told through movies and books. The true story of the men of the Bounty and the Pandora is fascinating.

HMS Bounty under the command of Lt. William Bligh, with a crew of 44 Royal Navy seamen and 2 civilian botanists, set sail for the South Pacific to collect breadfruit plants to be taken to Jamaica and the Lesser Antilles for food for the slaves. This was an idea proposed by the famous Joseph Banks of Captain James Cook's Endeavour.

The infamous event took place in the early hours of 28th April 1789.

The mutineers first sailed to Pitcairn Island but when they outgrew the small island some of them relocated to Norfolk Island.

In 1790 HMS Pandora was sent to Tahiti (arriving March 1791) to arrest the mutineers. In August, the Pandora sank on the Great Barrier Reef with the loss of 31 crew and four of fourteen prisoners. The survivors finally reached England after an arduous journey via Australia and Timor in March, 1792.
