Book Review

• "Any one who desires to know how a Family Genealogy ought to be written should study this book. It is by far the best example of its kind we have lately seen. Beginning with the three of the name who settled in this country but who were not the traditional three brothers, Cornelis Dircksen (1638), Christoffel (1655) and Dirck Jansen (1657) it traces down their respective lines in a way that reflects great credit upon the industry, energy and perseverance of the compiler. An interesting and valuable feature is a prefatory chapter on "The Origin of the Name Hoagland," by the late Mr. James Riker, who at the time of his death was assisting in preparing the work for the press. Many illustrations of persons and places are scattered through the pages, and extended sketches are given of many of those who have made the name Hoagland one of the most honored and respected in the annals of our country. To Dr. Cornelius N. Hoagland of Brooklyn, who has done so much for philanthropy and science as well as for genealogy, great credit is due for the substantial aid he has rendered in the publication of this book, which cannot fail to give great impetus to a study which is daily becoming more general, - the study of family history."^[1]
