England: Living Notables

"Living Notables" are the profiles of well-known public figures or people famous for an achievement, occupation, discovery, invention, or standing in the community in which they live. Famous people born in a country other than England, but who were born of English parents or retained English citizenship, can be included in the list of English Living Notables.

The England Project follows the WikiTree guidelines for the creation and maintenance of the profiles of Living Notables. These include:

  • the notable person is at least 18 years old, and
  • there is a Wikipedia article about them, thereby showing that they meet Wikipedia's guidelines for notability, and
  • the Wikipedia article appears in at least three languages, and
  • the Wikipedia article, in more than one language, includes information about at least one nuclear family member (spouse, child, parent, sibling), and
  • we are not aware that the notable person would prefer to keep the information we are putting on WikiTree private.

A link to the Wikipedia article is essential; application of a Notables Sticker is decided on a case-by-case basis. Merely being mentioned in the Wikipedia article about someone else does not qualify someone as Notable; example: a wife mentioned in a husband's Wikipedia article, when she does not have an article herself.

WikiTree's mission is to provide accurate genealogical information. It is not our mission to provide information about living people and current events. Although we use Wikipedia to determine notability, what is appropriate for a person's WikiTree profile is different from what is appropriate on Wikipedia.
Help:Living Notables

Profiles for living people (Notable or not) should only be created when the person has given their express permission or (for Living Notables) has a Project managing them.

Privacy

Living Notable Profiles should be set as Private with a Public Family Tree and Biography (Yellow Privacy). They may be set at a more restrictive privacy level if it is requested by the person themselves or a member of their nuclear family. As living people, they cannot be set as Public or Open. They are also given Project Protection (PPP).

Living family members of Notables (unless Notable themselves) must have Unlisted (black) privacy.

Names/information on living family members of a Notable (especially children) should not be included in the biography of the Notable. Example:
"John Smith is married, with two children.", rather than "John Smith is married to Wendy. Their children are Christopher (2010) and Robin (2011)."

Deceased family members of Notables (unless Notable themselves) shall have Open (white) privacy.

Trusted List Access

Living Notable Profiles are managed (or co-managed) by a Project - in this case, the England Project. Trusted List access is restricted to immediate family members (spouse, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, sibling, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, or first cousin). Access is also granted to the England Project member who has been entrusted with the maintenance of the Living Notable profile.

Removal of a Living Notable

When a Living Notable dies, the England Project will decide if it wants to retain PPP (Project Protection) or managership. A death date will be added to the profile, and the Privacy level may be changed.

In other circumstances, where the Living Notable has not died, but wishes either to manage their own profile, have content removed, or the entire profile deleted, they may issue a Take-down Request. This can come from the Notable themself, or from a designated representative, usually a documented relative.

If the profile remains, a note should be added to it indicating why it is no longer considered to be the profile of a Living Notable.
