Jeremiah (Jeremy) Snow, III. was born April 20, 1735 in Boston (Suffolk Co.), British province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. His father Jeremiah Snow, Jr., b. ca. 1705 - after 1788. His grandfather was Jeremiah Snow, Sr. His mother was Mary Byles, b: November 3, 1707 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. [1]
"There were three generations of silversmiths named Jeremiah Snow (Jeremiah Snow, Jr.; Jeremiah Snow III; and Jeremiah Snow IV). Jeremiah Snow, Jr. was the son of Jeremiah Snow, Sr. (d. before 1724), a mariner from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His son, Jeremiah III, was born in 1735 in Boston, Massachusetts. Jeremiah III then had a son, Jeremiah IV, also a silversmith. Jeremiah Snow III lived in Springfield, Massachusetts most of his life and was consistently identified as a silversmith from 1759-1786."[2]
Jeremy (Jeremiah III) Snow was a jeweler and also a clock and sword-maker. He moved from Boston to Springfield, Hampden Co. Mass., as a young man. [3] There, on November 29, 1759, in Springfield, Hampden Co., province of Massachusetts Bay, New England, he married Mary Brewer, b: 1737 in Wilbraham MA.[4]
Jeremy Snow III and his wife Mary (Brewer) Snow had 5 children:[5]
Mary Snow, b. February 8, 1761; died on March 9, 1761 ("infant child, J. Snow")
Mary Snow, b. March 7, 1762. Married Zebina STEBBINS of Springfield MA in October 1784.
Jeremy Snow (IV): b. July 17, 1764; became a gold and silversmith. He married his cousin Elizabeth BREWER (dgr Isaac Brewer of Ludlow MA). He died at Williamsburg, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, on December 24,1821; he had a daughter: Clarissa Snow, b. August 27, 1796 and a son: Jeremiah (Jeremy) Isaac Snow, b. 7 May 1813. Moved to Illinois.[6]
Clarissa Snow, b. June 4, 1767; she married her cousin Daniel STEBBINS (son of Joseph & Eunice Stebbins of Northampton MA) on May 27, 1791.
Ralph Snow, b. October 3, 1769; not married - lived in Northampton MA; d. Dec. 7, 1839 in Troy, NY.
Jeremy Snow III was an American patriot and a noted maker of brass sword hilts and scabbards in the 1770s, during the American Revolution. He also served a brief engagement as a private in Captain Walton's Company of the Massachusetts militia in September 1778; his wagon was used to help transport British prisoners taken at Saratoga to Cambridge MA. His teenage sons, Jeremiah IV and Ralph, helped him in his workshop.[7]
Sailor Jeremiah Snow III served with Massachusetts Navy during the American Revolution.
Jeremiah Snow III is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A106693.
Jeremiah also served as a Sailor, part of the crew of the Volunteer ship, "The Franklin."[8][9]
Jeremiah (Jeremy) Snow III died on February 24, 1803 in Springfield MA. He was 68 years old; cause of death was listed as "mortifica in the leg" which means gangrene. This death record confirms his birth year as 1735. [10] The Vital Records of Springfield MA state that his widow ("relict"), Mary (Brewer) Snow, survived him. She died on May 17, 1809. They are buried at the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts, USA, in the "Willow Avenue" section.[11]
