I am the custodian of the Snook's of Wessex family tree or one name study. Our family name dates back to 1480 when Richard III or Henry VII enquired about the armarments held by his subjects. There were 4 Snook's listed some owned long bows and pikes, they were farming in and around Lydlinch, Dorset. Many of their decendents remained in the Dorset, Wessex area where they served as farm workers or farm owners.

About 12 family members were transported to Australia for minor crimes and misdemeanours which occured at the time of the swing roits as machines were replacing farm workers. Several families were cod fisherman or planters as they were known, they occupied islands in and around Newfoundland. Others migrated to the east coast of USA, Southern Africa, New Zealand, Canada

Hi Paul,

I would also like to request that you take more care withy applying these automated changes to profiles. Your system might be “tidying up” profiles, but it is deleting information that people have put in. After fixing up the edits you made to profiles I manage, I browsed through some of your edits and I jus have to say “slow down”! Your edit tool is deleting too much information, and messing up the source references, deleting Research Notes. Maybe if you were fixing abandoned profiles it would be ok, but think that the information in a profile was written by someone who probably Had a good reason to write it. So ok, tidy up formatting, but don’t delete stuff!

Greetings Shaun

Many thanks for your contact, some background information. I was working through the Data Doctor suggestions for some of these profiles. Data Doctors has highlighted all sorts of errors, I realise some of these suggestions are at variance with the Cape of Good Hope Project for example some of the place names are not in sink at all. This is where you might have noticed my interferance, the project team might have to take actions to stop Data Doctor highlighting concerns with South African styled place names. There were other errors highlighted by the Data Doctor which were justifiable here I made changes to my wifes ancestors profiles and closed out the suggested errors.

I did use the Wikitree Sourcer, first I clicked on the Edit mode box - I then clicked on the Biography box, and clicked on the auto Bio box, I then imported source data from Family Search, and or Geni, Ancestry, Find My past, eggsa etc. - This action did delete all the Level 3 headings, I then cut and pasted most of other researchers information back but below the auto bio text. I did leave out duplicated information. As you noticed I tried not to delete source information, I might have caused a problem by not copy and pasting information such as - imported from Ged 2010 et al, or sourced by xxxx in 20??

With some profiles there was a disparity with the SAG code - eg. b2 or b2a1 some profilers called it a SAG no, I did change the title to SAG code and included it immediately under the stickers, in some instances I imported a code. How does the project recommend the SAG ?? be displayed and where?

However Shaun, it was not my intention to be a delinquent but rather to close out the Data Doctor errors and improve profiles where possible, I also clicked on father or mother is confident and clicked on circles stating "certain" with respect to names. I did this because more and more DNA information is appearing, my wife [Helberg-91] and her late father [Helberg-94] autosomal and her mt DNA are appearing as connected on many profiles. My intention is to use the Wikitree DNA confirmation citation maker app., to perform simple DNA matches and to highlight the connection using words developed by the tool, and to use the triangulation tool where possible.

Again my apologise for inadvertantly disturbing these well developed and mature profiles. happy hunting Paul

Hi Paul,

I see while you were adding info to some South African profiles you restyled and removed information and inline sources in the process. Sometimes I saw you put the sources that were inline to the end. It is kind of frowned upon to make such sweeping changes to project managed profiles especially if it is at odds with the project guidelines. I am not sure if you have an automated tool doing this or if you doing this by hand, but I recommend leaving the profiles in the project style if they already in that style rather than changing them. This is somewhat in conflict with the South African project guidelines which strive to keep the alternate previous information from other contributors instead of deleting it and display it in collatory fashion rather than as a narrative. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Cape_of_Good_Hope_-_Kaap_de_Goede_Hoop_%281652-1806%29/Project_Profiles#Process . I have not changed them back but I am concerned we losing info in the process. I know I prefer a narrative style myself and try strike a balance on the profiles I personally manage where I keep both a narrative and collatory section that just presents the facts, but on the project managed profiles and the pre 1900 profiles I recommend you try stick to the project guidelines by and large.

Hi Paul,

Please don't add "Born in the Colony" stickers to profiles of people born AFTER 1900, it causes data error 847 Born after template time frame. Use the "Australia Sticker" instead. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Australia_Sticker

Thanks, regards, Margaret, Australia Project.

Hi Paul

As previously requested on your ONS page, please see the England Project page on adding Coats of Arms to profiles, please do not add crests to any UK and Ireland profiles unless they are certified and and actually apply to the individual.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Project:_Overview_of_Heraldry_and_Coats_of_Arms

Remember pre1700 profiles should have at least one valid source added as per Paige’s comment posted below.

Kind regards

Hi Paul

We all did a great job this weekend, thank you, a job well done, we hope you had fun. The grand total for the event was 77,293 profiles sourced. The Mighty Oaks contributed 7,332 of those. Thank you for working with us.

If you open up your contribution or tracker list you can review your work and possibly do some tidying up, on the profiles.

Thanks again for this weekend, you rock

Hi Paul,

I noticed that you're working on pre-1700-era profiles. This is just a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz. At least one valid source should be added at the time the profile is created. Ancestry family trees or familysearch family trees are not acceptable sources for pre-1700 profiles. The source should also have enough information so that others can find and/or evaluate the source. The England Project has some excellent resources for finding sources, and also has some detailed guidelines for pre-1700 sources: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Project_Reliable_Sources

If you need help with this, our G2G Forum is a great place to start. You can get there by clicking the link on the Help menu.

Thanks!

Hi Paul. please make sure you add a parent category to a new category you create, otherwise it is not connected to the main category structure. See this one you recently created, which I have added the correct parent and category content. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Wiltshire%2C_Brickett_Name_Study That is how the category should look after you create it.

Thanks, regards, Margaret, Categorization Project.

Hi Paul, these two categories were created with incorrect parent categories and named incorrectly, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Upottery%2C_Devon%2C_England AND https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Springs_Old_Cemetery%2C_Gauteng%2C_South_Africa Don't add the category name as a parent category.

This is how they should look, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Upottery%2C_Devon AND https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Springs_Old_Cemetery%2C_Springs%2C_Gauteng_Province

The best idea when you need a new category, would be to do a category creation request in G2G so someone can create the categories correctly for you.

Kind regards, Margaret, Categorization Project.

Greetings Margaret

Many thanks for pointing out the error of my ways, by way of constructive criticism such as yours my Wikitree skills continue to evolve. regards, Paul

Hi Paul 😀

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Paul

We are so happy you decided to sign the Honor Code 😊.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
