Biography

Elizabeth Smythe was a daughter of Sir John Smythe of Westenhanger, Kent, and Elizabeth Fineux.[1][2][3]

Elizabeth was noted in the will of her grandmother Alice (Judde) Smythe, the will made on 10 Jul 1592, as the daughter of John Smythe.[4]

In 1601 Elizabeth was recorded as the the god daughter of her uncle Robert Smithe, gentleman of London.[5] He bequeathed to her a jewel priced twenty pounds.

Marriages

She married Sir Henry Nevill of Billingbeare, Berkshire.[1][2]

Mistress Elizabeth Smith married Sir Henry Nevile on 02 May 1609 at St Margaret Lothbury, City of London.[6]

There were five children of the marriage with Sir Henry Neville noted in the Nevill pedigree in the Visitation of Berkshire, namely: Richard, Henry, Katherine, Mary, and Philippa.[2]

Elizabeth was a beneficiary of the will of her uncle Sir Thomas Smythe, the will made in Jan 1621/1622 and proved in 1625, in which she was recorded as Elizabeth, Lady Nevell.[7]

Her husband Sir Henry Neville died 29 Jun 1629[8] and he settled Billingbeare at Waltham St Lawrence, Berkshire, on Elizabeth for her life.[9] However, she was not mentioned in his will.[10]

She married second Sir John Thoroughgood (or Thorowgood) of St John's Clerkenwell.[2][11]

On 11 Jan 1653/1654 an order was made for Sir John Thorowgoood to maintain the three children of Sir Thomas Lunsford who married Katherine Nevill, daughter of Dame Elizabeth, now wife of Sir John Thorowgood. The said children, Elizabeth, Phillipa and Mary Lunsford, were carried away by their parents to Virginia and remained there until their parents' demise. They were then sent back to the parish of St Andrew, Holborn.[12]

Dame Elizabeth was a beneficiary of the will of her second husband Sir John Thorowgood of Billingbeare, Berkshire, Knight, the will proved on 13 Nov 1657.[13]

Research Notes

There is a Marriage Licence dated 19 Sep 1608 for Stephen Thornehill of the City of London, Esquire, and Elizabeth Smith of Westenhanger. "In Capella de Ostenhanger".[23] Is this a potential first marriage for Elizabeth Smythe, daughter of Sir John Smythe of Westenhanger, Kent? Her cousin Elizabeth Smythe married a Timothy Thornhill.
