Biography

William Clark Smythe was born on October 12, 1837, in Northumberland, New Brunswick. He married Margaret MacArthur on January 27, 1863, in Newcastle, New Brunswick. He was working as a ship Carpenter at the time. ( Ref #1marriage ) The They raised nine children in 20 years.( See Census Records) ( Ref 2,3,4,5,) William Clark Smythe lived in Chatham, New Brunswick, from 1871,until some time after the 1901 Census record. in 1911 We find William in Charlotte County ,New Brunswick, (ref # 6 1911 Census of Canada)

the 1871 census shows him as William Smyth age 33 enumerated with his wife Margaret age 31 and 2 children Wickliff age 8 and Laurie age 1. NOTE: ( living in same dwelling # 29 Family # 33 are who I believe are Margaret's Parents, John and Matilda McArthur and 3 children ) ref #2,

the 1881 Census shows William C Smith, (NOTE the name mispelled Smith rather than Smythe), age 45 ,b. New Brunswick, Religion: Church of England, Occupation: Foreman Gas Works, enumerated with wife Margaret age 40, and 8 children. Wycliffe age 14(transcribed as 17), Laura age 12, in school, Albert age 9,in school Havelock age 7,in school, Ethelred age 5, Alberta age 4, Edith age 3,(transcribed as edgeth) Harold age 3 months , (ref #3) The 1891 census shows the family still in Chatham with William listed as William Smith age 55 now working as a Gas manager enumerated with wife Margaret age 50 and children, Havelocke age 16,Ethelred, age 15, Alberta age 13, Edgeth A (Edith A) age 11, Harold H age 9, Zorah G age 7 (ref 4) The 1901 Census shows Wm C Smythe b Oct 12 , age 66, Religion Church of England, a laborer with his wife Margaret b Aug 14, age 61, and 2 sons Havelock b jan 1, age 26, a mill laborer and Harold born Dec 27, age 19 a tailor. One daughter Zora born March 22, age 18, (Ref #5)

1911 Canada census shows William Smythe born Oct 1837 age 74 with wife Margaret born August 1838, age 72 and two sons, Havelock born January 1883, age 28 a painter, and Harold born December 1885, age 25, a tailor living in Charlotte county NB (ref # 6) He passed away in 1917. Death record shows William Clark Smythe died Sept 5th 1917 in St Stephen N.B. age 80yrs-11 months , Occupation: Gas Plant Supt, Chatham, N.B. Religion: Protestant, C of E (Church of England. cont. on page 65 )shows Cause of Death: Senile Dementia-Several Months, Born: Rosebury, Northumberland Co. N.B. ( ref #7)
